Alliance and Empire (Star Wars Miniatures)

title: Alliance and Empire

The seventh expansion for Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Miniatures game is called Alliance and Empire. The release date for this set was in May of 2007. The first showing of this booster set occurred at Gen Con Indy in 2006.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Star Wars, Alliance and Empire was included as a component of a product line. The majority of the miniatures originate from the original trilogy, but the Darth Vader included in this set showcases a paint scheme inspired by his appearance in Revenge of the Sith. In contrast, the Vader miniature in the Revenge of the Sith set sported a paint job reminiscent of his appearance in the classic trilogy.

The Common and Uncommon miniatures are generally simpler, while the Rare and Very Rare characters are distinguished by superior special abilities. Uniquely, characters are mounted on square bases, a feature exclusive to this set, with the Star Wars logo prominently displayed on the front. Instead of the customary blue, the character cards in this set are colored red.

This set expands the presence of the Yuuzhan Vong and introduces Wicket along with a translucent spirit version of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Furthermore, Biggs Darklighter and Ephant Mon were also a part of the set. Its initial unveiling took place through a preview featured in the 2007 Wizards of the Coast catalog.

Controversy

The first reports regarding unauthorized sales of the anticipated set prior to its official release date were substantiated on April 12th, 2007. This confirmation coincided with the public dissemination of key details about the set, which included scanned images of character cards, photographs, and the definitive set roster. Furthermore, unofficial sources revealed particular character statistics. Following this discovery, this information has been circulating across various websites and online forums.

These premature sales took place in Spain, allegedly due to a mistake that indicated the on-sale date was seven weeks ahead of the official launch. Some items briefly appeared on eBay before being removed from the auction platform. Wizards of the Coast exerted considerable effort to keep the information confidential, as George Lucas explicitly desired the miniatures to be revealed on the official release day. In addition, there could be serious legal repercussions because Wizards of the Coast is a publicly traded company, and the information is regarded as a trade secret until it is officially released, and the official release date is governed by contract law.

Wizards has not released any official statements about legal action. Due to the widespread attention this issue received, WizO_Sith, a moderator on the Wizards of the Coast forums, posted the following announcement on April 17th, 2007 (directly from Wizards' HQ): "Wizards of the Coast is aware of an error in shipping of Alliance and Empire in our European market. We have taken swift and immediate action to correct the error and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."
