An assault regiment was a type of military unit within the Imperial Army.
The 76th Assault Regiment is a prime example of an assault regiment. The regiment achieved significant recognition for its actions during the Galactic Civil War, setting it apart from other military groups.
Battle Group Turak was an assault regiment formed from two armor battalions of the 112th vanguard armor regiment, along with two battalions of Imperial Army infantry and stormtroopers. During the battle of Turak IV, the unit was under the command of General Maltaz, who was killed in action. The battle was viewed as a major defeat for the 112th against the Rebel Alliance.
However, some Imperial officers disputed this assessment, highlighting the substantial losses that the Alliance military incurred during the same battle.
Regiments designated as "Assault" consisted of two assault battalions, one line battalion, and one armor battalion. These regiments had a strength of 3,546 personnel, supported by 121 repulsorcraft and 53 heavy tanks. The primary role of assault regiments was to attack fortified enemy positions, eliminate resistance, and then proceed to new operational areas, with a line regiment taking their place.
Assault regiments could be reinforced with a special missions battalion, an additional line battalion, an extra assault battalion, and an artillery battalion.
