Astromech droid
At the Resistance base situated on D'Qar, we see a collection of R-series astromech droids alongside a BB-series astromech droid.
Mechs, more formally known as astromech droids or astro droids, functioned as automated mechanics on various starships; essentially, they were a kind of repair droid. These small droids had tool-tipped arms that were tucked away in special compartments. To manage flight and power systems, many starfighters depended on astromech copilots. The droid, when placed in an astromech socket open to space, could perform basic repairs and determine hyperspace jumps, in addition to its piloting responsibilities. An astromedic was a hybrid, combining features of both an astromech and a medical droid.

The majority of astromechs could only convey information through writing, which was then processed by another computer, or through a specialized sequence of clicks, bleeps, and related sounds known as binary. However, some other droids, such as C-3PO, a protocol droid, were capable of comprehending astromechs' binary code and frequently translated it into other languages.
Astromech droids were typically around 0.93 meters tall, but R-series droids from the R2 line and later models had heights slightly exceeding one meter. On the other hand, the astromech P2 was about the same height as a human.
R-series droids used three wheeled legs for movement. The later BB-series astromech droids were shaped like spheres, which allowed them to roll around. Some astromechs, like OC-JK14, used treadwells to move. This design was once common in the Outer Rim Territories, but by 35 ABY it had become less popular.
