Asylum was a shadowport that existed within the atmosphere of a gas giant situated in the Unknown Regions.
After the war of conquest that resulted in the downfall of both the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire, Asylum became a haven for those seeking refuge from the oppressive rule of the Eternal Empire on Zakuul. Among those seeking shelter were the Scions of Zakuul and their leader, Heskal, who had escaped the purges initiated by Emperor Arcann. In 3631 BBY, following the rescue of the Outlander from Zakuul, Koth Vortena, a former officer of Zakuul, along with his allies - Lana Beniko, a Sith Lord, Senya Tirall, a renegade Knight of Zakuul, and HK-55, a bodyguard droid - fled Zakuul aboard the Gravestone, an old combat frigate capable of withstanding the Eternal Fleet, and made port at Asylum for necessary repairs.
Heskal, acting on visions he received through the Force and convinced that a confrontation was necessary, manipulated Arcann into coming to Asylum by falsely claiming that the Outlander who had eluded him was present. This deception led to a battle between the Outlander's forces and the Eternal Fleet, as well as a duel between the Outlander and Arcann within the station's control tower. Despite being weakened from the conflict, the Outlander managed to escape with the Gravestone and its crew, fleeing to Odessen and thereby establishing the groundwork for an Alliance to oppose Arcann.
