Attack on the Elders' spaceport

The conflict on Melida/Daan, a planet that saw the Young—a group composed of children—and the Elders, the world's oldest inhabitants, locked in war, reached a critical point in 44 BBY. At this juncture, the Young launched an assault on the spaceport, the location where the Elders refueled their starfighters. The Elders made a strategic error by refueling all of their fighters, their main advantage in the war, simultaneously. Concurrently, a Young team infiltrated the hangar using an underground passage, aiming to neutralize the Elders' aerial superiority. Following a brief engagement, the fighters were successfully rendered inoperable, and a time bomb then obliterated a significant portion of the spaceport. This loss of advantage led the Middle Generation, previously neutral, to join forces with the Young, who then proclaimed their victory in the war.

Prelude

The planet of Melida/Daan had been embroiled in a protracted civil war for ages, with the Melida and the Daan tribes locked in perpetual conflict due to longstanding grievances. In 44 BBY, the Young, a collective of children from both tribes, sought to establish peace. They initiated this by attacking the armories of both factions, seizing their weapons, and advancing on Zehava, the capital city. However, the two tribes united as the Elders and counterattacked utilizing concealed starfighters, thereby gaining an edge over the Young.

After two weeks of conflict, Obi-Wan Kenobi, a prominent figure among the Young who had left the Jedi Order to support their cause, believing it surpassed the principles of the Jedi, observed the Elders' blunder of refueling all five of their fighters at once. He then devised a strategy to exploit this. Mawat, another leader of the Young, oversaw the digging of a tunnel from their underground base to a power shaft beneath the Elders' spaceport. Kenobi, along with Nield, Cerasi, and Roenni, formed a strike team that used this passage to enter the hangar during the refueling process.

The attack

The Young's strategy involved Roenni, the team's youngest member, discreetly disabling the fighters' power converters using a fusioncutter, while the other three provided security. This was successful for the initial three fighters, which were located near their entry point. However, the remaining two ships were closer to the Elders' guards, and Roenni hesitated to cross the hangar alone. Kenobi then joined her and together they approached the last two fighters. During this movement, a utility droid inadvertently bumped into a barrel, causing it to roll towards Kenobi and Roenni. A guard noticed the two intruders, but before he could react, Kenobi jumped and incapacitated the guard, then swiftly subdued a second one.

The remaining four guards opened fire with their blasters. As Roenni worked on disabling the fourth ship, Nield, Cerasi, and Kenobi returned fire. Roenni completed her task on the fighter and moved to the last one. Two guards attempted to flank the Young strike team by moving to opposite sides of the spaceport, and Kenobi adjusted his position to counter this. Upon finishing with the final fighter, Roenni, unaware of the guards' maneuver, jumped down and was immediately spotted by one of the flanking guards, who prepared to fire. Kenobi reacted by using the Force to knock the blaster from the guard's hand, before rushing to Roenni's side and pulling her back to safety.

Kenobi then pushed the barrel that the droid had knocked over earlier towards the guards. The barrel struck one guard, causing him to collide with another and pushing both into the line of fire of the other guards. Capitalizing on the guards' distraction, the strike team sprinted towards the shaft they had used to enter the hangar. Cerasi, Roenni, and Nield quickly jumped through the hole, followed by Kenobi, who threw a time bomb onto a nearby fuel tank. The subsequent explosion destroyed the majority of the spaceport.

Aftermath

The Middle Generation, consisting of the few middle-aged natives who survived the previous war, had informed the Young that they would join their cause if victory seemed imminent. Following the Young's success in disabling the starfighters, they followed through. With the added numbers from this alliance, the Young declared their victory in the war, and a government was established by the Young. Although the government initially maintained peace, internal conflicts over policies soon led to its collapse. Shortly after, the now-divided Young engaged in battle once again, this time against themselves. The intervention of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, who had been summoned to the planet by Kenobi to mediate peace, halted the fighting, and a robust peace agreement was soon negotiated between the Elders and the Young.

Behind the scenes

The attack on the spaceport was first depicted in The Uncertain Path, the sixth book in the young-readers Jedi Apprentice series, authored by Jude Watson and released in 2000.
