In the year 1 BBY, while it was awaiting a meeting with the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser known as Maximus and the freighter called Ojai, the Rebel BFF-1 bulk freighter named Phoenix found itself under attack by Imperial forces. Captain Keyan Farlander, piloting his R-22 Spearhead starfighter, successfully fended off the Imperial starfighters until the arrival of the Maximus.
In 1 BBY, the Alliance to Restore the Republic uncovered information about a clandestine military construction initiative being undertaken by the Galactic Empire. To gain further insights, Alliance High Command formulated a strategy to infiltrate the Imperial communications network. As part of this plan, Rebel operatives captured the BFF-1 bulk freighter Phoenix, which was carrying Imperial communications satellites. The Phoenix was scheduled to link up with the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser Maximus and the freighter Ojai, but their arrival was delayed. Assuming minimal risk, Red Squadron's Captain Keyan Farlander was deployed in a single R-22 Spearhead starfighter to safeguard the Phoenix pending the arrival of the Maximus.
Upon exiting hyperspace, Farlander discovered that the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Intrepid was already present in the area. TIE interceptors and TIE bombers belonging to the Star Destroyer engaged Farlander, compelling him to execute evasive maneuvers. Farlander successfully shielded the Phoenix from the Imperial fighters until the Maximus appeared, accompanied by the Ojai and a flight group of T-65 X-wing starfighters from Blue Squadron, which led to the Intrepid's retreat.
The stolen satellites were then moved to the Ojai, which delivered them to the CR90 corvette named Jeffrey. The satellites were put into position near the Cron Drift, and they subsequently intercepted plans for the Death Star, an Imperial battle station equipped with a superlaser capable of obliterating a planet.
This battle was initially featured in the 1993 video game Star Wars: X-Wing, developed by LucasArts, specifically in the fifth mission of "Tour of Duty II: The Great Search", titled "Protect Captured Satellites."
