The expansive public square known as the Bank of the Core Plaza was centrally located within the financial heart of Galactic City on the planet of Coruscant. Functioning as a central hub for galactic financial activities, the plaza was primarily known as the site of the headquarters for the Bank of the Core.
Prior to the Clone Wars, specifically in 24 BBY, the plaza was the location for the opening ceremony of the All Planets Relief Fund. This fund, a key initiative of Chancellor Palpatine, aimed to quickly address urgent funding requests from planets in distress, bypassing the often slow processes of the Galactic Senate. The fund's main account received contributions from numerous Senate-member worlds in crystalline vertex. As the ceremony at the plaza concluded, a heist targeting the vertex treasury was attempted. Members of the Slam gang, working with galactic criminals Granta Omega and Jenna Zan Arbor, tried to steal the treasury while it was being escorted to its designated secure vault at the Core Bank by the Senate Guard.
The treasury heist at the plaza was a ruse, designed to draw away all Senate Security personnel. Omega and Zan Arbor's actual goal was the assassination of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was leading a full Senate debate in the Galactic Senate Building. The debate, concerning whether to restrict further involvement of the Jedi Order on behalf of the Senate, was also orchestrated by Omega and Zan Arbor. It stemmed from a petition initially backed by Omega's early benefactor, Eeropha Senator Sano Sauro (who now desired the Republic Chancery), and brought to fruition by Jedi-disgraced Nuralee Senator Bog Divinian and Jedi-ousted Romin dictator Roy Teda. The conspirators intended to simultaneously eliminate Jedi intervention and Palpatine.
During the Clone Wars, the Bank of the Core Plaza was also the location where Kal Skirata initially encountered the terrorist Perrive during a clandestine operation.
