The Battle of Garqi transpired during the conflict known as the Yuuzhan Vong War.
Prior to the main engagement, a reconnaissance mission was launched to Garqi, a planet under Yuuzhan Vong control. This mission involved Jedi Knights Corran Horn, Ganner Rhysode, and Jacen Solo, who journeyed aboard the Lost Hope, a frigate designed for self-destruction. These Jedi, accompanied by six Noghri commandos, transferred to the Best Chance, a smaller shuttle housed within the Lost Hope. The Lost Hope was detonated above Garqi, scattering debris, including the Best Chance, which was intended to blend in with the wreckage. Upon reaching the planet's surface, the Jedi linked up with resistance fighters battling the Yuuzhan Vong.
The Jedi and Noghri positioned themselves within subterranean tunnels beneath a plaza in the Wlesc district, where Yuuzhan Vong forces were congregating. They utilized holovision goggles to observe the streets above. Human slaves, referred to as Thrall, then initiated an ambush against the Yuuzhan Vong, marking the beginning of the battle. The Noghri began to eliminate the Chazrach, while the Jedi confronted the Yuuzhan Vong warriors. Ganner Rhysode was responsible for the death of the first Yuuzhan Vong warrior, but another warrior issued a command to the slaves, both Human and Chazrach, causing them to turn against the Jedi.
The Jedi began to eliminate the slaves, and Corran Horn successfully killed the lead warrior, while precisely aimed sniper fire from resistance fighters eliminated the third. The Jedi then retreated to the nearby Pesktda Xenobotanical Garden, which housed Ithorian Bafforr trees. The Yuuzhan Vong pursued them into the Garden. The leading warrior, named Krag Val, issued a challenge to Corran, but Ganner stepped forward to confront him, and the Noghri Mushkil positioned himself in front of Ganner, although the Noghri was killed. Ganner then attempted to engage the Yuuzhan Vong leader, but Krag Val's amphistaff struck him, inflicting a severe wound on Ganner's face.
Jacen Solo engaged Krag Val, and managed to temporarily disable him until Corran Horn came. But by the time Corran engaged the warriors, their armor had gone under an allergic reaction to the Bafforr tree pollen, and suffocated the warriors. Samples were taken of the pollen, and the garden was burned, along with the warriors. The Jedi and Noghri returned to the Best Chance, and the resistance fighters chose to stay behind.
The Ralroost arrived in system with Rogue Squadron, one of the pilots being Jaina Solo. Their plan was to pick up the Best Chance, but a huge Yuuzhan Vong force arrived in the area. Rogue Squadron fought the coralskippers, but the Best Chance was being overrun. At that time, Admiral Pellaeon arrived in-system with the Chimaera. The Chiss Clawcraft engaged and overran the coralskippers, while the Star Destroyers engaged the enemy capital ships, destroying a Yuuzhan Vong corvette. This gave the New Republic time to flee, along with the Imperial forces and a large refugee fleet.
