The clash that occurred on Jedha City, specifically on the moon known as Jedha, during 1 BBY is known as the Battle on Jedha. This conflict arose when Saw Gerrera's militant group, the Partisans, launched an assault on a Galactic Empire convoy. This convoy was transporting valuable Kyber crystals through Tythoni Square. Individuals from the Rebel Alliance, namely Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso, and the droid K-2SO, found themselves embroiled in the confrontation against the Imperial forces, alongside Chirrut Îmwe and [Baze Malbus](/article/baze_malbus], who were Guardians of the Whills. After the fighting subsided, Andor, Erso, Îmwe, and Malbus were apprehended by the Partisans and subsequently taken to the Catacombs of Cadera as prisoners.
As the convoy made its way through Tythoni Square, an explosive grenade was hurled from an elevated position, landing directly in front of the tank. The resulting explosion brought the vehicle to an abrupt stop, signaling the emergence of the Partisans. They initiated an attack on the stormtroopers, utilizing both ground-level assaults and sniper fire from the surrounding buildings. When Jyn Erso ventured into the street to rescue a child and reunite them with their mother, her companion, Cassian Andor, was compelled to assist her in reaching safety. He neutralized the tank's gunner, who had just destroyed a nearby tower with a missile. As Jyn sought cover near the immobilized vehicle, Cassian noticed a Partisan on an overhead bridge preparing to deploy grenades. He shot the Partisan, creating a diversion as the explosives detonated upon impact with the ground, an event witnessed by Benthic, the Partisan troop leader. As Jyn and Cassian fled, another bomb was thrown at the stormtroopers and detonated. Following the explosion, the Partisans looted the vehicle, seizing the Kyber crystals. This occurred just as Imperial reinforcements, including an All Terrain Scout Transport, arrived on the scene.
As Jyn and Cassian battled their way through the increasing number of troopers, K-2SO, Cassian's reprogrammed droid, arrived and detonated a grenade on a group of stormtroopers. The trio made their way back to the square, where the reinforcements were inspecting the damage to the tank. They were mistaken for an Imperial droid directing prisoners. Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus, Guardians of the Whills, intervened and saved Jyn and Cassian. As K-2 returned to Cassian's ship, the Partisans secured the square and captured the rebels and Guardians. Benthic believed they were hostile due to Cassian's attack. When Jyn revealed she had business with Saw Gerrera as the daughter of Galen Erso, the Partisans put bags on their heads (which slightly annoyed Chirrut, who was blind anyway) and took them to their headquarters in the Catacombs of Cadera, where Jyn was brought before Saw, while Cassian, Baze, and Chirrut were put in a cell.
