Plot summary

After she and her husband Owen Lars met their deaths at the hands of stormtroopers, the spirit of Beru Whitesun Lars reflects upon the significance of her adopted nephew Luke Skywalker in her life. She remembers bustling around the kitchen, serving blue milk, and arguing with Owen about allowing Luke to enroll in the Imperial Academy. She wonders if their fate would have been different had Owen permitted Luke to leave. She shares with the reader that she once attended a cooking class where her teacher declared her blue-milk cheese to be the most exceptional they had ever tasted. Beru reminisces about her youthful aspirations of opening her own cafe or restaurant in Anchorhead. Beru then discusses the difficulties she and Owen faced with infertility.

The issue of fertility treatments was put to rest when Obi-Wan Kenobi arrived, carrying a baby Luke. Beru considers the decision to raise Luke as the most fulfilling one she ever made. She remembers him as a "sweet, happy little boy" who caused very little trouble. Beru recalls watching Luke mature into a nineteen-year-old young man and doing his laundry. Beru believes that Luke inherited too many of the admirable qualities of his father. Beru also remembers being present at the funeral of Luke Skywalker's grandmother Shmi Skywalker Lars, where she provided blue milk and cheese to all those in attendance. She also reflects on telling Owen that they were going to raise Luke as their own child. Despite the tragic end to her and Owen's lives, Beru finds solace in knowing that Luke Skywalker departed with Ben, encountered Princess Leia Organa, destroyed the Death Star, and ultimately saved the galaxy.
