Lightsaber training staffs, also referred to as Jedi training sabers or Bokken sabers, were wooden swords employed in the practice of lightsaber combat.
The Bokken saber was a crucial tool in the education of any aspiring Jedi. Padawans utilized these implements to master fundamental combat skills and techniques within a secure environment. Once a student demonstrated proficiency with a Bokken saber, whether against live opponents or advanced lightsaber simulation technology, they were then permitted to advance to using actual lightsabers. Jedi Knights could always revert to Bokken sabers for supplementary training exercises, either for their own benefit or for the instruction of their Padawans.

During the time of the High Republic Era, several Jedi, including the Padawan Jecki Lon, made use of Bokken sabers during a lesson conducted by Jedi Master Lakshay.
During the period known as the Clone Wars, Petro engaged in practice with a training staff while aboard the Paladin-class corvette Crucible. He deflected laser fire from a Marksman-H training remote and then demonstrated to his fellow trainees a novel maneuver of his own invention, which he called the "Whirlwind of Destiny."

In the age of the Imperial Era, Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger practiced with training sabers crafted by Kanan Jarrus and Garazeb Orrelios. These were used to assist the Mandalorian in learning how to properly handle the Darksaber.
During the time of the New Republic Era, Wren would later engage in sparring with a Bokken against the droid Huyang and Ahsoka Tano, after consenting to resume her training as Tano's Padawan. Tano's instruction of Wren using Bokken sabers involved their application in zatochi training exercises.
In reality, bokken are Japanese wooden swords utilized for training in the art of Japanese swordsmanship.
