A terrain feature consisting of sizable spikes jutting upwards from the soil on the planet Geonosis was known as a caltrop field. During the Second Battle of Geonosis in 21 BBY of the Clone Wars, a substantial caltrop field presented an obstacle to Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi and his Clone Commander Jet's battalion, hindering the progress of their All Terrain Tactical Enforcers towards the Galactic Republic's designated rendevzous point for the engagement. Nevertheless, while traversing this field, Mundi employed his lightsaber to sever several spikes, thereby enabling the walkers to advance.
The initial depiction of a caltrop field occurred in "Landing at Point Rain," the fifth installment of the second season of the animated television program Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which was broadcast on November 4, 2009.
