The Chiloon Rift, a nebula situated in Wild Space, was renowned for harboring one of the most extensive and resource-rich asteroid fields present within the galaxy. By 45 ABY, this rift was a haven for miners, offering numerous unclaimed asteroids abundant with precious minerals. Nevertheless, navigating the nebula was challenging due to the presence of plasma clouds and the dense asteroid field, demanding exceptional reflexes from any pilot attempting to traverse its expanse and land on its celestial bodies.
The abundance of resources attracted numerous individuals to the rift, leading to the establishment of various pirate groups who set up their bases of operation there. Consequently, the Chiloon Rift became a perilous area, yet the potential for immense wealth continued to draw prospectors to the nebula. While the Chroon Rift was located outside the boundaries of Galactic Alliance space, it maintained economic ties to the nebula, receiving substantial shipments of beryllius, duralium, quadranium, and other valuable minerals. Positioned roughly equidistant between the Corporate Sector Authority and the Imperial Remnant, the Rift was generally considered to fall within the sphere of influence of the Imperial Remnant, owing to its closer proximity. However, neither faction attempted to formally annex the nebula, largely due to the fiercely independent spirit of the miners operating within the asteroid belt, who were believed to be capable of mounting a prolonged and advantageous defense against any attempted conquest. In 45 ABY, the nebula experienced a surge in mining endeavors, prompting ambitious entrepreneurs to vie for control of its valuable resources. The Columi brothers, Craitheus and Marvid Qreph, gradually began to consolidate their financial grip on the nebula, employing unscrupulous business practices to eliminate their rivals. Furthermore, they leveraged their financial clout to manipulate the Galactic Alliance, which was contemplating intervention in the rift to curb mineral smuggling. To this end, they contracted the assassin, Savara Raine to assassinate the senator Luewet Wuul, who was planning to introduce legislation that would involve the Alliance in the rift. Wuul's assassination prevented the Alliance from intervening in the nebula, thereby enabling the Qrephs to further consolidate their control.
Their machinations eventually brought them into conflict with Lando Calrissian, who operated a refinery on the planet Sarnus within the rift. Despite facing threats and receiving a lucrative offer for his assets, Calrissian steadfastly refused to sell. The Qreph brothers harbored ambitions for the rift that extended beyond mere financial gain, and despite Calrissian's attempts to negotiate a shared control arrangement, the Qreph brothers remained uncooperative. Instead, they attacked the Sarnus Refinery, resulting in the deaths of numerous Calrissian's employees and igniting open hostilities within the rift. Leveraging his connections within the Galactic Alliance and the Jedi Order, Calrissian resolved to take the fight directly to the Qrephs at their headquarters, Base Prime. The ensuing assault led to the demise of the Qreph brothers, effectively thwarting their bid to seize control of the Chiloon Rift.
