Daine Jir

Daine Jir was a male human who held the rank of Imperial officer within the Galactic Empire during the era of the Galactic Civil War. He served under the command of Darth Vader, the Sith Lord, on the Devastator, an _Imperial I_-class Star Destroyer, during the hunt for the stolen plans of the Death Star in 0 BBY.

Following the Devastator's successful location of the Tantive IV above Tatooine, Darth Vader suspected that Princess Leia Organa possessed the Death Star schematics. After a space battle, the Empire's 501st Legion boarded the Tantive IV, resulting in the capture of the Rebel Alliance crew and killed some of the members. Subsequent to Organa's capture, Jir voiced his concerns to Vader, suggesting that her detention could foster sympathy for the rebellion within the Imperial Senate; however, Vader dismissed Jir's worries.

Behind the scenes

Daine Jir's initial appearance was in the 1977 film Star Wars, specifically Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, where he was portrayed, without credit, by Al Lampert. His identification occurred later in the 2018 canon reference book Star Wars: Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious. It is believed that the character's name is a pun on the word "danger", inspired by the line "Holding her is dangerous."

The 2020 Disney Die-Cut Classics adaptation of A New Hope, authored by Ryder Windham, incorrectly attributes the discovery of Organa on the Tantive IV to Jir and Vader, rather than the stormtroopers as the movie depicts.
