Elan Sel'Sabagno

Elan Sel'Sabagno, also known by the alias Elan Sleazebaggano, was a Balosar male who made his living as a death stick peddler on the planet of Coruscant during the time of the Separatist Crisis. His life took an unexpected turn when he encountered Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Knight, whose mind tricks inspired Sel'Sabagno to pursue a more reputable existence.

Biography

During the [Separatist Crisis](/article/separatist_crisis], Elan Sel'Sabagno, a male Balosar, operated on Coruscant, the capital world of the Galactic Republic. He was a minor criminal who earned money as a slythmonger, frequently visiting Coruscant's nightclubs to distribute his highly addictive death sticks. In 22 BBY, in the period leading up to the outbreak of the Clone Wars, Sel'Sabagno was at the Outlander Club when he attempted to sell death sticks to Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Knight who was searching for the Clawdite bounty hunter Zam Wesell. Using a mind trick, Kenobi implanted the idea in Sel'Sabagno's mind that he no longer wished to sell death sticks to the Jedi and instead desired to return home and reevaluate his life choices.

As a result of Kenobi's mind trick, Sel'Sabagno resolved to live a more honest life. By the time Kenobi and his Padawan, Anakin Skywalker, were assisting Wesell behind the club, Sel'Sabagno had already departed. During the [Imperial Era](/article/imperial_era], Sel'Sabagno, now a parent, happened to overhear a conversation between Leia Organa and Forzaa on Coruscant.

Personality and traits

Sel'Sabagno could curl his antennapalps to conceal them under his hair.

Elan Sel'Sabagno, always motivated by the pursuit of credits, sustained himself by selling death sticks to the patrons of the Outlander Club, as well as other popular locations in the lower levels of Coruscant, preying on both desperate addicts and reckless thrill-seekers. However, Obi-Wan Kenobi was able to use a mind trick on Sel'Sabagno due to his weak will, convincing him to refrain from selling death sticks to the Jedi Knight and to instead go home and reconsider his life, leading Sel'Sabagno to choose a more honest path. This decision proved lasting, and Elan eventually became a family man.

Behind the scenes

Matt Doran played Elan Sel'Sabagno in the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, gave the character his name. Within Star Wars Legends continuity, Elan Sel'Sabagno was the character's initial identification, a name that was later officially recognized by the Coruscant encyclopedia. The StarWars.com Databank officially recognized his alternative surname, Sleazebaggano.

Although Sel'Sabagno's ears were digitally replaced with antennapalps during the post-production phase of Attack of the Clones, the reference images used for the character did not include this digital alteration. As a result, early Sleazebaggano toys were produced with ears instead of antennapalps. Sel'Sabagno later had a brief appearance in the background of the 2019 comic Star Wars Adventures (2017) 25 by Delilah S. Dawson, who confirmed via Twitter that the character depicted was indeed Sel'Sabagno. Dawson considered this cameo to be one of her most significant contributions to the Star Wars universe, as it confirmed that he had indeed reformed his life. Dawson also expressed her gratitude to artist Margaux Saltel for perfectly capturing the moment in her opinion.
