Electronic Arts, often shortened to EA, is an American company that develops, markets, publishes, and distributes computer and video games. Founded in 1982 by Trip Hawkins, the company initially focused on publishing games for home computers. By 1987, EA transitioned to creating games in-house. As the 1990s began, the company expanded into developing games for console systems. Through acquisitions of several successful development studios, EA has become one of the largest third-party publishers since the early 2000s.
EA is well-known for a number of franchises and brands such as EA Sports, Need for Speed, Medal of Honor, Plants vs. Zombies, The Sims, Command & Conquer, and the later installments of the Burnout series. A large number of popular and important games have been brought to market by EA.
On October 11, 2007, Electronic Arts made the announcement that they had acquired BioWare, the studio behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, along with Pandemic Studios, which developed Star Wars: Battlefront. On May 6, 2013, Disney and EA jointly declared that EA would possess exclusive rights to produce Star Wars video games for a number of years going forward. These new games would be created across several of their studios, including Star Wars Battlefront by DICE and Project Ragtag by Visceral Games. Additionally, Star Wars: The Old Republic was to be continuously updated and supported under the terms of the agreement, with frequent content additions and expansion pack releases. Besides the creation of original Star Wars games under this license, Electronic Arts gained the opportunity to incorporate Star Wars–themed elements into their other games. The Sims 4 was the first title to feature Star Wars–branded content, with the release of costumes representing Princess Leia, Yoda, Darth Vader, and a Rebel pilot on October 1, 2014, followed by costumes of Aayla Secura, Darth Maul, and Boba Fett on May 4, 2015.
On January 25, 2022, it was revealed that three new games were being developed by EA under the guidance of Respawn Entertainment: a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order called Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a strategy game, and a first-person shooter game. However, on February 28, 2024, the announcement was made that the first-person shooter project had been cancelled.
