Emil Graf, a cartographer of the human species and male gender, embarked on adventures in Wild Space. He was the grandson of Milo Graf, and nephew of Lina Graf who, in the early years of the Galactic Empire's reign, found themselves in a series of unfortunate events. Graf journeyed across the galaxy with his Kowakian monkey-lizard companion, Noni, his BB unit astromech droid BB-00, and the monster droid known as CR-8R, aboard the Star Herald, an Imperial prototype scout ship inherited from his grandfather and great-aunt.

Graf's initial appearance was in the Tales of Wild Space supplementary story featured in Star Wars Adventures (2017) 1, titled "Stop, Thief!," a creation of Cavan Scott (writer) and Jon Sommariva, Sean Parsons, and Charlie Kirchoff (artists). The character's lineage was revealed, establishing him as the grandson of Milo Graf, a figure from the Adventures in Wild Space series of chapter books, some of which were penned by Scott. Mirroring his grandfather, Emil keeps a Kowakian monkey-lizard as a pet. The Star Herald, his spacecraft, also originates from the chapter book series, identified as a vessel previously owned by a former Imperial.
Scott gave him that name to honor Emil Fortune, who served as an editor for the Adventures in Wild Space chapter book series.
