Entrenched

The 12-page comic, "Entrenched", which can be found in Star Wars: Visionaries, was both authored and illustrated by Alex Jaeger along with M. Zachary Sherman.

Storyline Summary

The narrative centers around Corporal Jobin, a youthful Rebel soldier, during the Battle of Hoth. The story unfolds parallel to the words he records in a holographic message intended for his mother.

As the Rebel forces brace themselves for the impending Imperial attack, the Empire deploys formidable AT-ATs and massive Juggernauts. Jobin and his comrades engage in combat within the trenches. One soldier identifies a group of advancing snowtroopers and an AT-ST targeting the Rebellion's planetary ion cannon. Jobin commands half of his unit to remain in the trenches with Jielu, while he leads four soldiers in an attempt to reclaim Ion Control. After failing to reach Ion Control, he instructs two of his men, Grond and Sora, to outflank the AT-ST, while he, Roj, and another Rebel launch a direct assault. They successfully destroy the walker and proceed towards the ion cannon.

Simultaneously, the snowtroopers occupying the captured emplacement overhear Rebel requests for ion support. The Rebels then storm the emplacement. They eliminate the Imperials, but Grond and an unidentified Rebel are killed in action. After Jobin fires the cannon, his team sets it to self-destruct. The surviving three soldiers fall back to Hangar Bay Seven, only to encounter Darth Vader and his forces.

Jobin and his squad then retreat to Hangar Bay Ten, where Jobin is shot. He entrusts Roj with his recorded message. Darth Vader briefly questions him, but Jobin refuses to cooperate. Provoking Vader by spitting on his helmet, Jobin is killed. Mon Mothma, Jobin's mother, listens to Jobin's letter at the Rebel rendezvous point near Sullust. Crix Madine informs her of his death. Subsequently, she prepares to brief the Rebels for the Battle of Endor, declaring with determination: "The Emperor has made a critical error, and the time for our attack has come."

Creation

Alex Jaeger and M. Zachary Sherman both wrote "Entrenched," with Jaeger also providing the artwork. This comic was made for the 2005 graphic novel anthology Star Wars: Visionaries, which was edited by Jeremy Barlow and consisted of comics created by concept artists who contributed to the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Jaeger's initial concept for the comic was to provide the backstory for the line "Imperial troops have entered the base," which is announced over Echo Base's intercom in the 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. He was inspired to craft a narrative centered on the rebel troopers fighting in the trenches on Hoth, while also showcasing elements of the Imperial Army like AT-ATs, AT-STs, and snowtroopers. Jaeger worked on the comic in his free time while holding a full-time job.

Canon

Despite the Rebels programming the ion cannon for self-destruction in this narrative, it is operational once more during Jaden Korr's mission to Hoth.

On page 69, a mistake appears in Vader's dialogue: the word "were" is used instead of "where".
