In the year 3 ABY, the events of the Escape from Kalaan unfolded, witnessing Brenn Tantor and Luke Skywalker being liberated from captivity by Tantor's own stormtrooper unit.
During the tragic Massacre on Abridon, Imperial general Tantor and his forces apprehended Skywalker. Subsequently, Skywalker was transported to Kalaan and incarcerated, awaiting his transfer to Coruscant where the Sith Lords planned to meet him.
As the battle progressed, Tantor defied an order from his commanding officer, Grand General Malcor Brashin, to destroy a refugee camp. Consequently, Tantor was relieved of his command and relegated to the prison on Kalaan.
Upon his arrival at Kalaan, Tantor was placed in an open-air cell, with Brashin informing him that he would face trial, conviction, and execution the following morning. Unbeknownst to Brashin, numerous factors were about to conspire against his intentions.
Firstly, while en route to Kalaan, Tantor had established contact with the Rebel Alliance and arranged his defection with General Tyr Taskeen. Upon Tantor's arrival, Taskeen was prepared, with a small base and several ready-to-launch shuttles awaiting him a short distance from the Imperial base.
Secondly, Brashin made a critical error by assigning a unit of Tantor's own stormtroopers to guard him. These ten stormtroopers maintained unwavering loyalty to their commander, who had led them through numerous battles, making it relatively easy for Gana Lant to persuade his nine comrades to liberate their general.
After Brashin departed from Tantor's cell, Lant arrived, informing Tantor that his guards were prepared to defect. Freed by Lant, Tantor commandeered the Tracked Mobile Base, a heavily armored command crawler. He instructed Lant's men to storm the prison and free Skywalker. With his military expertise, the Jedi hero Skywalker, the prototype TR-MB, and the unit of stormtroopers at his disposal, Tantor finally believed he was in a position to defect successfully.
The Kalaanite resistance fighters. The group began their journey through Kalaan's desolate valleys; however, they could not depart the prison without triggering the alarm. Alerted, several Imperial patrols and the turrets lining the canyon walls posed a threat.
Despite these obstacles, Tantor successfully overcame the patrols and seized control of the turrets, aided by several native Kalaanite resistance fighters and the AT-ST walkers they had captured. After carefully navigating the valleys, Tantor and Skywalker safely reached Taskeen's base. From there, they and their squad were airlifted to Taskeen's fleet, where Skywalker was welcomed back to the Alliance, and Tantor was imprisoned until he could prove he was not an Imperial spy.
