Fia (engineer)

Fia, a female Human engineer specializing in hypernautics, entered existence in 11 BBY. By 8 ABY, she was based out of the Tanquilla Beach shadowport, located within the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim Territories. Having graduated from the School of Starship Engineering at Corellia University's, her exceptional engineering skills were matched only by her strong reaction to anyone who doubted her due to her age or gender. She was employed at Spang's, a repair facility managed by her grandfather, Spang, and in 8 ABY, she took charge of the engine overhaul of the New Republic CR90 corvette named FarStar. While working on this refit, Fia discovered evidence of hidden programming, a "trapdoor," installed in the ship by its previous owner, Imperial Moff Kentor Sarne. This allowed the vessel to be sabotaged remotely, which in turn necessitated the engine refit to fix the resulting damage.

Biography

Fia, a female Human, was the granddaughter of Spang, a engineer who worked on starship at the Tanquilla Beach shadowport situated in the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim Territories. Entering the world in 11 BBY, Fia displayed a natural talent for hypernautics engineering and studied at the School of Starship Engineering of Corellia University's, finishing her studies in 8 ABY at nineteen years old. She then immediately journeyed to Tanquilla Beach to begin an internship under her grandfather at his repair bay, Spang's, which was the largest on the station and the only one equipped to handle repairs on vessels the size of capital ship.

A few months following Fia's arrival at Tanquilla Beach, the New Republic CR90 corvette FarStar came to the station seeking repair work on its hyperdrive. The drive had sustained damage from sabotage and combat in the nearby Shintel system. Spang's was the only repair facility on the station that could perform the necessary work, but Spang was extremely busy and declined to take on the job, even refusing to meet with the FarStar's command crew. However, Captain Kaiya Adrimetrum, the officer in commanding of the FarStar, encountered ConJob, an information broker and florist who was a close friend of the engineer. ConJob, who had lived on the planet Siluria III, recognized Adrimetrum from her time leading the Siluria III resistance. Imperial forces had killed Conjob's family during their occupation of the world. In exchange for Adrimetrum's assistance in retaliating against them, he convinced Spang to assist the New Republic delegation. Spang conceded and allowed Fia to oversee and carry out the repairs.

Fia arranged for a portable drydock to be positioned next to the FarStar and began repairing the corvette's engines, disassembling them level by level to overhaul them over a period of two weeks. While running diagnostics, Fia discovered traces of trapdoor circuitry embedded within the machinery. The FarStar had previously been part of the forces under the command of Moff Kentor Sarne, the former Imperial warlord of the Kathol sector, and Sarne had intended for the vessel to carry out special missions for him. To this end, he had extensively modified the vessel with trapdoor computer programming to ensure that any officer assigned to command of the vessel could not steal the corvette or undermine his authority. This trapdoor circuitry had allowed one of Sarne's agents—Lieutenant Palme—to upload a computer program into the FarStar's systems while the vessel was on Shintel. The program caused an overload in the ship's engines that burned out the hyperdrive when the FarStar attempted to jump to lightspeed.

After presenting her findings to Captain Adrimetrum, Fia expressed confidence in her ability to remove the trapdoors in the engines but admitted she lacked the technical expertise to search for other trapdoors throughout the ship. She was certain there would be more embedded in the vessel's other systems. Spang, who had stopped by to check on Fia's progress, mentioned that the work was similar to some he had seen done by slicers operating out of Pembric II. He advised Adrimetrum to seek out a man named Breslin Drake on the planet; Drake had connections all over Pembric II and would be able to find individuals who could assist Adrimetrum in removing the trapdoors.

After completing work on the FarStar's engines, Fia accompanied the ship on a test run through neighboring star systems to ensure her work was satisfactory and declared them fully functional. In addition to repairing the engines on the FarStar, Fia also upgraded them from a Class Two hyperdrive to a Class One.

Personality and traits

Fia was a young female Human with short brown hair. Known for being friendly, Fia also enjoyed flirting and teasing the spacers who frequented Spang's. A highly capable engineer confident in her abilities, Fia also acknowledged the limitations of her knowledge and was willing to admit when she didn't know how to do something. She took offense to anyone who questioned her abilities based on her age or, even worse, her gender. She sympathized with the New Republic and its objectives.

Having graduated from the Corellian School of Starship Engineering, Fia was a highly skilled engineer capable of modifying and repairing capital ships, starfighters, and space transports. She also had training in starfighter weapon repair, and computer programming and repair. Fia could operate repulsorlift vehicles and fly small vessels. She possessed a good business sense, and her time at the School of Starship Engineering gave her knowledge of Corellian culture. She understood some alien languages and could determine the value of objects. She typically wore greasy coveralls and a tool-filled workbelt, and carried a datapad and comlink.

Behind the scenes

Fia made an appearance in Shintel Downtime, the fourth RPG adventure in The DarkStryder Campaign by West End Games, authored by Paul Sudlow and released in 1995. Even though Fia is sympathetic to the New Republic, she will turn down any invitation to join the crew if offered by one of the players during the scenario. Fia was later mentioned in West End Games' Platt's Smugglers Guide, which came out in 1997.
