Fud Sang

Fud Sang, a male of a small species, was serving time as an inmate at the high-security Desolation Alley detention center. This prison was situated on the fourth moon of the planet Oovo, found in the Outer Rim. Around 32 BBY, during the Galactic Republic's last decades, Sang's skills as a pilot were considered subpar. However, Fenn Booda, the prison warden, would sometimes let Sang race in the Podraces that Booda organized for inmate entertainment. Sang, piloting a BRE Block6 Tri-Ram Podracer, became very familiar with one of the courses on the moon and achieved considerable success. This success eventually led to opportunities to race on the ice planet Ando Prime, where his growing piloting abilities also made him popular.

Biography

Anakin Skywalker once possessed a statue of Fud Sang.

A male member of a species of diminutive aliens, Fud Sang, despite his unimposing stature, received four consecutive life sentences. Consequently, he was dispatched to Desolation Alley, the maximum-security prison located on Oovo IV, the Outer Rim's planet Oovo's fourth moon, at some point prior to 32 BBY. He was then placed under the supervision of Fenn Booda, the prison warden. Known for occasionally providing Podraces as entertainment for the inmates, the warden, at some point, recognized Sang's potential as a pilot. This led Booda to offer the small, quick-witted inmate a chance to compete against off-world pilots on the moon's desolate tracks. Accepting the offer during his incarceration, Sang was given an old BRE Block6 Tri-Ram from Bokaan Race Engineering. The Block6 was not in the best shape, and Sang often had to repair it with discarded and outdated components. However, with these modifications, it became a formidable machine, boasting excellent traction, above-average turning capabilities, and adequate cooling. These strengths compensated for the Podracer's sluggish acceleration and low maximum speed. Despite these attributes, Sang was not considered a particularly skilled pilot overall.

Driven by a desire to compete with professional off-world pilots, despite his limited abilities, Fud Sang dedicated himself to pushing his machine to its absolute limit. Booda even suggested that Sang might earn his freedom if he performed well. Although some did not see him as a threat on the track, Sang gained an extensive understanding of a course known as Vengeance. He essentially memorized the course layout as it weaved in and around Desolation Alley, and his victories there made him a favorite on that track. His detailed knowledge of the Oovo IV courses, in general, gave him an advantage during races, often compensating for his average piloting skills. He even achieved a record time of 03:51.921 minutes on the Vengeance course. Sang was occasionally permitted to race outside of Oovo IV, and he achieved some recognition on the icy planet of Ando Prime, where he became a popular racer on one of the planet's drag courses. Sang even challenged other racers to compete against him. Fud Sang's racing popularity grew to the point that a small statue was created in his likeness. Anakin Skywalker, another Podracer pilot, owned one of these statues.

Fode Annodue, the Troig race announcer, often commented on Sang's prison sentence whenever he saw Sang on Oovo IV. By 24 BBY, Sang's black and purple flag could be found on a racecourse on Mon Calamari. This course was situated in the city of Orotoru G'am, with the flag positioned near the Hall of Heroes.

Personality and traits

Fud as he appeared in 32 BBY

Despite his unassuming appearance, Fud Sang was serving four consecutive life sentences on Oovo IV. He was known for his energy and talkativeness, and he was determined to defeat any off-worlders who came to his territory. He constantly upgraded his Podracer with any parts he could find, regardless of their quality. He also sometimes taunted his competitors before races.

Fud was short and had a round, fat body. His arms were much longer than his legs; in fact, each arm was almost as long as his entire body. Sang also had two white eyes on bulbous stalks and a narrow snout. His skin was purple.

Equipment

Fud Sang

When Warden Booda gave Fud Sang the opportunity to race on Oovo IV, he provided him with an old Bokaan Race Engineering BRE Block6 Tri-Ram Podracer. The engine's primary color was black, with light blue paint on the front ends. The exhaust tubes on the back of the engines were also blue. The cockpit had a similar color scheme, with the rear end painted black and the front end painted the same blue as the engines. The vehicle was often in disrepair, and Sang frequently had to repair it with scrap and outdated parts. Despite its low speed and weak acceleration, the vehicle had excellent traction and handling, giving Sang a good amount of control over his racer.

Behind the scenes

Concept art from The Phantom Menace

Fud Sang's design was initially created for the 1983 film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, but it was not used until it was revisited for the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. Fud Sang's inclusion in The Phantom Menace progressed to the stage of conceptual art and a conceptual sculpt. Eventually, a maquette of the character, dating back to Return of the Jedi, appeared in scenes in Anakin Skywalker's bedroom.

Fud Sang had a more significant role as a playable character in the 1999 video game Star Wars Episode I: Racer, which was released on the same day as The Phantom Menace. Players could unlock Sang during the first circuit of races, with his track serving as an introduction to Oovo IV. Sang could only be unlocked if the player finished ahead of him. Jim Ward, who also voiced Mars Guo, provided Fud Sang's voice in Racer.

According to a 2006 Star Wars: Blogs article by Tim Veekhoven titled "Alien species concepts that became part of the SW universe," which was part of his Source Blog series, Sang may have had a species name and a homeworld called Sanhueli and Hueli IV, respectively. This blog article is not considered canon because the draft information was discarded.
