Plot summary

In 34 ABY, Captain Keevan is compelled to pull the Halcyon out of the solar storm due to the severe damage it is sustaining, despite the possibility of pirates waiting for them on the other side. Meanwhile, Shorr Komrin, the Resistance spy being sought after by the pirates, chooses to surrender himself in order to give everyone else on the ship a chance, recalling how Padmé and her daughter Leia Organa taught him to stand up for what is right. When Shorr's granddaughter Cimina questions why he must make the sacrifice, Shorr explains that it is the only way her children and grandchildren can have the future he envisioned for them. Shorr gives her a pendant as a reminder of the galaxy they are fighting for, and then he leaves Cimina and boards an escape pod. As the Halcyon emerges from the solar storm, it is confronted by Crimson Jack's pirate ship, who warns them to prepare to be boarded or face death. Cimina then asks D3-O9 for a story in which the good guys outsmart the bad guys and overcome insurmountable odds.

A flashback reveals that during the Galactic Civil War, the Empire commandeered the ship. Maz Kanata is brought aboard the Halcyon at General Kardan's request. Kardan was a collector of war spoils, including ancient relics and priceless treasures taken from the planets his forces invaded, which he saw as liberation from heathens in the name of the Empire. These items included a Kalikori totem from an ancient clan on Ryloth, the oldest known collection of statues of the four sages of Dwartii, a rare vase from the Kitel Phard Dynasty, and the box he carried them in during war, hewn from a Wroshyr tree on Kashyyyk thousands of years ago. All of his acquisitions were kept secret from the rest of the Empire and stored aboard the Halcyon behind thick Beskar walls. Maz meets with General Kardan on the bridge and offers to sell him the Crown Jewels of Alderaan. Their authenticity is tested and confirmed, and Maz is paid 80,000 Imperial Credits due to their uniqueness resulting from Alderaan's destruction. D3-O9 narrates that while the Imperials controlled the upper decks of the Halcyon, the lower levels were a different story, where pirates and smugglers like Hondo Ohnaka and Lando Calrissian played Sabacc.

A guard informs General Kardan that Hondo Ohnaka, a pirate with a long criminal history, has been spotted on the ship. Kardan urgently dispatches stormtroopers to capture Ohnaka while he and Maz head to his vault to secure the Crown Jewels of Alderaan. When Kardan throws the treasure inside and wonders how Hondo could possibly get his hands on them, Maz mentions the cameras he has inside, prompting the General to check them. To Kardan's dismay, Hondo is already inside the vault and heading to the engineering room, so he orders the vault to be reopened, which has a three-minute lock reset time. Stormtroopers are sent after the fleeing Hondo, and as they chase him through the engineering room, he uses various tactics to slow them down, claiming he is now a legitimate businessman rather than a pirate. Eventually, Hondo appears to be cornered and is tackled off a ledge, but this plays into his plan as the stormtrooper falls into electrical tech while Hondo grabs onto the platform and hangs on from underneath. Back at the vault, the doors finally unlock, and General Kardan is confused to see that all of his treasures are still inside. A guard then informs him that Hondo has either fallen to his death or escaped, so Kardan orders his shuttle to be prepared and has a guard start collecting his items to be taken to the shuttle. After the guard fills the Wroshyr tree box with treasure, he hits the General in the face with it, knocking him out. The guard, who is secretly Lando Calrissian, throws the box at two stormtroopers and shoots them down.

Lando takes the box and meets up with Maz and Hondo in a private room, but when Maz opens the box full of treasure, she dumps out all of its contents and explains that they will each receive 40,000 Imperial Credits and will anonymously tip off the General's underling that the relics are aboard the Halcyon. When Lando asks what she gets out of it, she explains that the Wroshyr box was given to her by someone special a long time ago, and the General will be too distracted to give them enough time to sneak off the ship at the next port. Hondo mentions the Crown Jewels, but Maz reveals that they are not the real ones, as she obtained the gemstones from Alderaan centuries ago but the necklace is fake, and the real ones were likely destroyed when the Death Star destroyed the planet. As the group prepares drinks, Lando explains that it wasn't about the credits for him, as he is now an administrator and just wanted one last adventure before a life of management.

Returning to the present, D3-O9 tells Cimina that the three were able to escape the Halcyon undetected and informed the Imperial Security Bureau about Kardan's secrets. Just then, Crimson Jack and his pirates board the ship and hold the passengers at blasterpoint, and Crimson Jack goes to the bridge to greet Captain Keevan. As he demands the Resistance spy, one of his pirates informs him that an escape pod has been launched from the Halcyon, and its passenger Shorr contacts him and surrenders himself.
