Hanno speeder

Hanno speeders represented an early form of speeder, acting as a predecessor to the more advanced landspeeder. A considerable time before the Mos Espa Grand Arena was constructed on the desert planet of Tatooine, thrill-seeking individuals participated in unrestricted, all-out races within the natural canyon amphitheater situated at the edge of the Northern Dune Sea, the same location where the arena would later be built.

Initially, these races involved carts pulled by animals, but Hanno Speeders eventually took over. Legend has it that these very races were the genesis of what would become podracing. By the dawn of the modern podracing era, roughly a century before the Galactic Civil War, Podracers had supplanted Hanno Speeders in these competitions.

Behind the scenes

Within current Star Wars canon, the initial mention of hanno speeders occurred in "Podracing on Tatooine," an article featured within the "Guide to the Galaxy" section of issue fifty-first issue of Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon, a magazine series by De Agostini, released around December 23, 2015. Hanno speeders were initially a part of the Star Wars Legends continuity, first appearing in the 2000 reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Episode I, authored by Kristin Lund.
