Horse

Horses were robust animals that the Ewoks of the Forest Moon of Endor utilized as riding beasts. On Kef Bir, the Ocean Moon of Endor, existed a horse-resembling species called the orbak.

Biology and appearance

These horses possessed the potential for having spotted, shaggy coats of hair. Their hardiness made them well-suited to journeys of considerable length.

Behavior and intelligence

Orbaks were horse-like creatures that were also used as mounts by humans.

Horses, much like the orbaks located on Kef Bir, the Ocean Moon of Endor, could be tamed and used for transport, and even as mounts for hunting activities.

History

Originating from an unspecified location within the galaxy, horses were brought to the Forest Moon of Endor by human scouting groups sometime before the outbreak of the Galactic Civil War. The indigenous Ewoks, small sentients who made their homes high in the trees, began to employ them as riding animals for hunting on the forest floor.

Behind the scenes

The Ewoks and other inhabitants of Endor were depicted using Earth ponies and full-sized horses as mounts and pack animals in the made-for-TV films Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984) and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985). In Caravan of Courage, the Ewok term for pony is "gaupa," while a full-sized horse is referred to as a "pulga."

The first canon mention of horses in Star Wars occurred when Cliegg Lars spoke of them in the German version of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. They were later mentioned in English within the 2015 reference work Ultimate Star Wars.
