Kel Algwinn was a Human male, training at the Sith Academy located on Korriban during the period known as the Jedi Civil War. The details of his gender can be found here.
Before Revan and his allies made their way to Korriban, Kel Algwinn had been given a Sith Medallion by Yuthura Ban and subsequently became a member of the Sith Academy. His Sith Master frequently criticized him for his excessive trustfulness and willingness to display vulnerability. Despite Algwinn's self-perception of weakness, he was, in reality, not as deeply influenced by the dark side as the other Sith hopefuls within the Academy. This discrepancy led him to question his suitability for the Academy. When Revan, a Jedi and former Sith Lord, infiltrated the Academy seeking the Star Map on the planet, he made an effort to convince Kel to embrace the Jedi path. Algwinn found himself torn between the conflicting perspectives presented to him. However, before he could reach a conclusion, he met his death during an attack on Revan by the Academy's inhabitants, who had discovered his role as a Jedi spy.
In contrast to the other Sith hopefuls, Kel extended a warm greeting to Revan upon their initial encounter. He possessed a sense of self-doubt regarding his capabilities and questioned whether the Sith way was truly meant for him. Despite knowing the Sith Code and being able to recite it from memory, he struggled to grasp its underlying meaning. Kel's Sith Master often reminded him that he was excessively trusting and prone to exhibiting weakness.

While Kel Algwinn doesn't officially become a member of the Jedi Order in the canonical storyline, the player, controlling Revan, has the option to successfully persuade him to either join the Jedi or simply leave the Sith. Either choice will cause him to depart from the academy. If the player suggests that Kel join the Jedi before the destruction of Dantooine, the player can speak with him in the training area of the Jedi Enclave, where Kel is now wearing blue robes and dressed as a Jedi Padawan. If the player chooses to engage in conversation with him, Kel will express his surprise that the Jedi would accept him, given his past as a Sith student. Contrary to his expectations, the Jedi Council members extended a warm welcome to Kel, explaining that anyone who turns away from the dark side is always welcome to return to the light. He also acknowledged that he has a long journey ahead of him and expressed his gratitude to Revan, mentioning that he now has a Jedi Master. If the player suggests that Kel join the Jedi after Dantooine's destruction, Kel will leave the Sith and join the Jedi, but the player will not have the opportunity to speak with him on Dantooine afterward.
If the player is playing as a dark-side character, upon discovering Kel's doubts, the player has several options available. The player can inform Uthar Wynn or Yuthura Ban about Kel's uncertainties, which results in Kel's disappearance from the academy. Alternatively, the player can provoke him into a fight and kill him, or engage in conversation with him and convince him that his true place is with the dark side.
