Kroop birds were two-legged avian beings that were native to the planet of Omaka. These birds existed in groups, constructing nest structures shaped like tubes on the slopes of mountainous trails. While they usually stayed within their mountain environments, where they ate wild gomgourds, kroop birds would sometimes venture to different places to find food. The inhabitants of Omaka usually regarded kroop birds with apprehension.
Around 232 BBY, a group of kroop birds chased the human girl Fiorna and her droid companion HM-7 from the mountainside all the way to the child's village as the local farmers were getting ready for their Dunkutu Day celebration. The birds, determined to retrieve gomgourds that had been taken from their habitat, inflicted considerable destruction on the festival arrangements. The Pooba Jedi Initiate Nubs and the child went back to the kroop birds' mountain dwelling to gather more wild gomgourds, without realizing that the gomgourds were actually the birds' property. Eventually, after the group of birds began their defense against the would-be thieves, Nubs understood that the gomgourds were a vital food supply for the birds, and the two children playfully gave the gourds to their new bird acquaintances.
