Kythoo's Bell, a security installation of the Jedi Order, was situated at the Sason Temple, a prison for Jedi located on the Outer Rim gas giant of Sason. Its purpose was to maintain the containment of a Starweird sealed away within. Jedi Masters Shaak Ti and Aayla Secura warned that the Sason Temple's structural integrity and balance were contingent on Kythoo's Bell's resonance; silence necessitated immediate and permanent evacuation. The archaeologist Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra, operating between 3 ABY and 4 ABY, mistakenly identified Kythoo's Bell as a mere Jedi artifact and sought its acquisition. She partnered with Luke Skywalker, a Jedi-in-training, who hoped to use the Bell to bolster his strength for a confrontation with the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Upon reaching the temple and locating Kythoo's Bell, Aphra attempted to extract a crystal from within. Despite successfully retrieving the crystal, her actions caused the Bell to fall and shatter. Consequently, the Starweird was freed due to the temple's loss of resonance, revealing the Bell's true function to Aphra. Skywalker then utilized the shards of Kythoo's Bell, inadvertently channeling the Force to pierce the Starweird's form completely, although the creature swiftly regenerated.
