Lestra Oxic

The esteemed Lestra Oxic, known as Lord, was an accomplished Human legal professional. His expertise extended to both defense and civil matters, making him a sought-after counsel for numerous affluent and influential figures across the galaxy. His career spanned from the era of the Clone Wars well into the Second Galactic Civil War, a testament to the significant investments he made in treatments designed to extend his lifespan and maintain his health. He rose to prominence during the waning years of the Republic by representing the political adversaries of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine in highly publicized legal battles. Notably, he navigated the period of the Galactic Empire while maintaining his considerable wealth. As an avid enthusiast of Republicana, he generously allocated funds to acquire Coruscanti artwork from the Republic's past. Upon receiving confidential information from an acquaintance regarding the whereabouts of the highly sought-after Insignia of Unity, he committed substantial resources to its pursuit.

Oxic located Tobb Jadak, the pilot of the Stellar Envoy and the possessor of crucial information leading to the Insignia, in a comatose state on Nar Shaddaa. He subsequently financed Jadak's medical care at the Aurora Medical Facility, a process that lasted approximately four decades. Once Jadak regained consciousness, Oxic monitored his efforts to locate the Stellar Envoy, ultimately discovering that the vessel was now the renowned Millennium Falcon. He then shadowed Jadak and Han Solo to Tandun III, where they intended to find the Insignia. It was there that Oxic suffered a profound disappointment, realizing that the object he had relentlessly pursued for half a century and at great expense was, in fact, a forgery. The authentic Insignia of Unity had been replaced with a counterfeit before the Republic Group made off with what was actually a replica.

Biography

Height of Success

Lord Lestra Oxic, a Human of noble standing, established a notable career as a prominent defense attorney located on Coruscant. During the decline of the Galactic Republic, Oxic managed a large and well-regarded firm, known for his exceptional skill in both verbal and data manipulation, and he represented influential figures and celebrities. Oxic himself wielded considerable influence, engaging with Senators and entertainers within Coruscant's exclusive social circles. As Senator Palpatine gained increasing power, eventually becoming Supreme Chancellor, Oxic developed a strong aversion to him and his associates. When Palpatine initiated politically motivated trials against his adversaries on charges of sedition during the Clone Wars, Oxic eagerly took on the defense of those accused.

In his resistance against Palpatine, Oxic cultivated numerous relationships within the Republic Group, a clandestine organization of elites dedicated to undermining Palpatine's authority. He learned that the Republic Group had secretly taken the Insignia of Unity, a complex representation of the Republic's emblem crafted from aurodium, orichalum, and Coruscanthium, from the Senate podium. They replaced it with a replica during a restoration. Their intention was to safeguard this potent symbol until they could restore the Republic's honor and remove Palpatine from his dictatorial position.

The Pursuit of Jadak

Despite his overt opposition to Palpatine, Oxic successfully navigated the transition to the Galactic Empire, maintaining his status as a remarkably wealthy lawyer with enduring friendships and clientele, including Bail Prestor Organa. Around the time of the Declaration of a New Order, it was discovered that the Insignia of Unity was a fake, transforming the original into a highly coveted and priceless collector's item. Oxic, with his appreciation for art and antique collecting, particularly artifacts from the late Republic era, was determined to be the one to locate and possess this ultimate collectible.

Oxic, a tall, slender, and clean-shaven individual, became increasingly concerned about his physical appearance as he aged, recognizing that a deteriorating appearance would diminish his authority in the courtroom. He invested heavily in maintaining a youthful appearance and extending his lifespan through treatments at the prestigious Aurora Medical Facility on Obroa-skai, which specialized in rejuvenation therapies for the galaxy's elite.

The Stellar Envoy, key to discovering the Insignia of Unity

One of Oxic's long-standing friends and clients, former Senator Des'sein, began to suffer from a congenital illness. In his final days, Oxic visited him and Des'sein confessed to the theft of the Insignia of Unity. He revealed that the crew of the Republic Group freighter Stellar Envoy, which had vanished during the final days of the Clone Wars, held the key to uncovering the lost artifact. Oxic initiated his investigation, but even with the name of Tobb Jadak, the ship's captain, he uncovered little information. His breakthrough came when he discovered secret documents previously owned by former Senate Bureau of Intelligence and Imperial Intelligence Director Armand Isard, which detailed the Stellar Envoy's escape from Coruscant while being pursued by the Republic, providing the trajectory of its hyperspace jump.

Oxic dedicated a year to pinpointing the ship's location, eventually learning that the Stellar Envoy had jumped to Nar Shaddaa, where it crashed. Captain Tobb Jadak sustained severe injuries, leaving him in a vegetative state, while copilot Reeze Duurmun perished. Oxic located Jadak in a coma at a Nar Shaddaa medical facility. He allocated a significant portion of his vast wealth to cover the substantial costs of Jadak's rehabilitation in a private room at the Aurora Medical Facility. His hope was that Jadak would eventually recover under the care of renowned neurologist Doctor Lial Sompa, whom Oxic paid to join the staff, and provide him with the clues needed to track down the symbol.

Later in Life

Oxic transformed his hobby of collecting Republicana into an all-consuming obsession. It soon became the central focus of his personal life, with Oxic frequently attending auctions and bidding exorbitant amounts for pieces from late-Republic Coruscant. He was particularly drawn to that period and location, as it reminded him of his past glory days. When the famous Hydians auction house relocated to Epica during the Yuuzhan Vong War, where Oxic maintained a mansion overlooking Epica City, participating in auctions became exceptionally convenient.

Later, Oxic secured the services of Koi Quire, a displaced Firrerreo who proved to be a highly valuable asset to his firm, demonstrating remarkable instincts. She quickly became his most trusted assistant, managing much of his private affairs. Oxic also employed assistants of a less refined nature, utilizing security specialists and hired muscle such as Gomman, Cynner, and Remata to safeguard witnesses, gather information, apprehend bail-jumpers, and execute sensitive tasks. In his later years, his practice remained highly prestigious, with Oxic continuing to be one of the galaxy's leading defense lawyers. However, Oxic reduced the size of his firm, retaining only around one hundred employees and focusing primarily on cases that he could personally manage. Oxic's visits to Aurora became increasingly crucial, and he maintained an unusually youthful appearance and robust health as he entered extreme old age.

The Pursuit Begins

Later, Oxic grew dissatisfied with Galactic Alliance Chief of State Natasi Daala's administration. His dissatisfaction stemmed not from her policies, but from the fact that the former Imperial admiral's election had increased interest in Imperial and Republic artifacts, leading to heightened bidding for Oxic's preferred items. In that year, Oxic represented Colla-Arphoc Automata, which had long been defunct due to the Empire, as they re-established themselves and filed a lawsuit to resume manufacturing. They asserted, supported by a key witness from Colla Designs, that they possessed documents proving their dissolution had been for a limited period and had since expired.

During the same year, Jadak finally awoke from his coma and began to piece together his memories. Quire traveled to Obroa-skai, providing him with ten thousand credits, ostensibly as an insurance settlement, and facilitated his release after arranging for him to access Sompa's files. Jadak believed he had secretly accessed and stolen the files to reconstruct his life's memories, starting with the final mission he now recalled. Quire approached Oxic during an auction at Hydians, informing him of this exciting development. Upon learning that Jadak had headed for Nar Shaddaa—presumably not where the Insignia of Unity had been hidden—Oxic decided to have his men capture Jadak rather than allow him to operate independently, intending to directly involve him in locating the lost treasure.

Oxic was displeased to learn that Jadak had evaded his employees' attempt to apprehend him, particularly as this complication arose while he was under pressure to complete discovery in the Colicoid case. While he hoped to resume tracking Jadak, he had to prioritize the case. The trial commenced on Holess, a world known for its enthusiasm for legal drama, but it was quickly disrupted when the Colicoid star witness, being escorted up the Mount of Justice by Oxic's personnel, was subjected to a holographic projection of a hueche, its natural predator, by agents of Rej Taunt, a crime lord with a long-standing grudge against the Colicoids. The witness recoiled defensively and rolled down the ramp, where Taunt's employees captured and carried it away. Without this crucial witness, Oxic's case was ruined, and the suit was dismissed after a one-day stay. Oxic was disappointed not only that he had failed to win the case and earn a significantly larger fee, but also that he would not receive a gift of one of the incredibly valuable statues that had once stood on the Senate Plaza. He would now have to purchase it instead.

Following the dismissal, Quire reported that the agents were not from the Galactic Alliance, as Oxic had suspected, but from Taunt, a man Oxic despised due to their intense rivalry in acquiring Republicana. Among Taunt's saboteurs was Tobb Jadak, who appeared to be tracing the fate of the Stellar Envoy. Oxic was unable to act on this information, but soon Sompa contacted him to report that Han and [Leia Solo](/article/leia_organa_solo-legends]—a woman whom he had known since childhood as Bail Organa's daughter—had been investigating the Millennium Falcon's history and had discovered that it had once belonged to another doctor at Aurora. He had learned that both the Millennium Falcon and Stellar Envoy were the same age and strongly suspected that they were the same ship. Quire found the theory plausible, and Oxic agreed to dispatch his men to Vaced, where the former owner had acquired the ship, hoping that Jadak would find his way there. They could also steal the Millennium Falcon and search it for clues or hold it to secure Jadak's cooperation, as the Solos were also headed for Vaced.

Discovery at Last

Oxic had to contest with Han and Leia Solo to find the Insignia of Unity.

On Vaced, Cynner and Remata stole the Millennium Falcon, but its anti-theft systems returned it to the spaceport. Oxic, having been nearby to oversee the team after losing confidence in their ability to complete the task independently, rushed to the scene and, acting as their legal counsel, offered a plea deal for joyriding and misuse of personal property. He reminded the Solos that pursuing further charges would require them to dedicate significant time to a trial. They accepted, and his involvement in the scheme went unexamined.

Upon learning that a slicer droid had been left inside the ship from an attempt by Jadak's confederate Flitcher Poste to steal the ship before Oxic's men, Oxic had the droid's owner track its anti-theft homing signal. This led them to the ship, with the Solos, Jadak, and Poste all aboard, headed for Tandun III. Oxic hurried there with Quire and four guards, finding the others already admiring the Insignia of Unity. He claimed it based on his substantial investment and the fact that he was the only one who knew the specific details of what he sought, though he offered the others finders' fees. However, upon scanning it, he was devastated to discover that the piece was a counterfeit; the genuine Insignia had been stolen long before the Republic Group absconded with it. He quickly realized that Sils Naffiff, head of the Naffiff Brothers construction corporation hired to renovate the Senate Rotunda earlier, was likely the thief. He offered Jadak and Poste jobs helping him track down the genuine symbol, which they accepted. With groundquakes beginning to threaten the integrity of the ancient structure in which the Insignia had been hidden and the treasure proven worthless, Oxic and the Solos parted amicably but urgently, barely escaping as the fragile planet itself began to disintegrate.

Personality and Characteristics

Lord Lestra Oxic possessed a sharp legal mind and a thorough understanding of the law, earning him recognition as an exceptionally skilled lawyer and compelling speaker. While not an ideological extremist, he disapproved of Supreme Chancellor and future Emperor Palpatine's policies, particularly his manipulation of the law for political gain. He became a vocal opponent of the powerful Palpatine, even at personal risk, and remained powerful, wealthy, and influential even under the Empire.

Oxic was affluent, but he valued his life and lifestyle more than money. He took considerable pride in his appearance, understanding that his presentation was crucial to winning cases. Consequently, he spent lavishly to maintain his appearance and prolong his life. An enthusiastic collector of Coruscanti Republicana, he was willing to spend vast sums in pursuit of a desired piece, even exceeding what he believed the item was truly worth. He invested enormous amounts of money in his quest for the Insignia of Unity, only to be brought to tears when he discovered the object he had pursued was a forgery.

Behind the Scenes

The character of Lord Lestra Oxic was conceived by author James Luceno for the novel Millennium Falcon, in which Oxic served as a rival to Han Solo and Tobb Jadak in uncovering the Millennium Falcon's secrets.
