All Terrain Personal Transport

The All Terrain Personal Transport (AT-PT) represented a lightweight anti-infantry walker utilized by the Galactic Republic and subsequently by the Galactic Empire. Rothana Heavy Engineering, a division of Kuat Drive Yards, handled its manufacturing. Designed to enable a solitary trooper to engage in intense combat independently, it served as the foundational design for both the AT-ST and the AT-AT.

AT-PTs were constructed to allow individual troopers to enter intense combat situations alone, possessing the firepower of an entire squad. They measured only three meters in height and were operated by specialized AT-PT pilots.

These walkers could achieve velocities of up to 60 kilometers per hour and ascend inclines of 45 degrees, employing hydraulic adjusters to maintain equilibrium. The vehicles were equipped with a long-range communication antenna for patrol duties. The primary drive mechanism supplied power and hydraulic pressure to the two legs, incorporating cooling vents. The cockpit access hatch was situated on the side, while the emergency flare launcher was positioned directly above the viewport.

In comparison to its intended adversaries, namely enemy soldiers, the AT-PT boasted substantial armor, capable of withstanding small-arms fire. The walker was armed with dual blaster cannons along with a single concussion grenade launcher, primarily effective against infantry. The walker's enhanced agility compensated for its relatively light armor (compared to most other armored units).

These units frequently operated in groups to amplify their firepower.

AT-PTs represented enhanced versions of Light All Terrain Personal Transports and were assembled within Imperial mech factories.

The AT-PT was conceived for the Galactic Republic decades prior to the Clone Wars; however, the conflict highlighted the Republic's need for a compact, anti-personnel walker, increasing the AT-PT's relevance. It stood as one of the earliest AT series transport models.

The AT-PT saw limited production, with the majority deployed aboard the Dreadnaught-class cruisers belonging to the renowned Katana fleet, and many were lost when the fleet disappeared.

Numerous concepts first implemented in the AT-PT were subsequently incorporated into the AT-AP, AT-ST, and AT-AT.

During the Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Empire made use of a number of these walkers. They often served as sentries and patrol vehicles in the vicinity of Imperial facilities.

Imperial commander Brenn Tantor authorized the deployment of AT-PTs across several battle zones before his defection. Tantor also employed them during the Battle of Eos.

A significant quantity of AT-PTs participated in the Battle of Ralltiir shortly after the Battle of Yavin, where Luke Skywalker and Rogue Squadron destroyed the majority of them. Three AT-PTs were transported aboard a Sentinel-class landing craft during the search for the starship Nonnah. They also provided security for a supply base situated on the Jade Moon. Several were also present on Gerrard V during the planet's liberation. Soon after, Rebel Alliance commandos stole three AT-PTs from the Weapons Research Facility located on Fest; Rogue Squadron offered protection during their escape. Darth Vader, the Sith Lord and Supreme Commander of the Imperial Military, deployed AT-PTs during the Reytha campaign and the Battle of Zaloriis. Furthermore, a number of AT-PTs served as part of Blizzard Force under Vader's command during the Battle of Hoth. AT-PTs also patrolled an Imperial prison within the Maw. The Star Destroyer Motivator transported a contingent of AT-PTs, which managed to escape the ship's wreckage during the Battle of Kothlis.

The m'Yalfor'ac Order on Guiteica operated approximately three dozen AT-PTs during the Rebellion era. Given the AT-PT's design for Human operators and the Order's composition primarily of Bitthævrians (who surpassed Humans in size), shorter Bitthævrians typically piloted the Order's AT-PTs. It's believed the Order acquired these AT-PTs by seizing a pirate vessel in one of the rare instances of Bitthævrians venturing beyond Guiteica.

The walkers of the Katana fleet, alongside the fleet itself, were rediscovered by the New Republic and subsequently employed in the Republic's conflict against Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Behind the scenes

Alliance Intelligence Reports specified the cost of an AT-PT as 15,000 credits and its cargo capacity as 25 kilograms; however, later publications superseded these figures.

These walkers made their initial appearance in Timothy Zahn's novel Dark Force Rising. In the 2001 video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, AT-PTs function as the Empire's Heavy Strike Mech unit.

Initially, the AT-PT's forward viewport was limited to a narrow window close to the roof, accompanied by a substantial anti-glare panel beneath it. Following its debut in West End Games' Dark Force Rising Sourcebook, the anti-glare panel was erroneously identified as the lower portion of the viewport, leading to the perpetuation of this error in nearly every subsequent depiction of the walker.

Pandemic Studios developed a walker designated as AT-PT for the original Star Wars: Battlefront, but it was ultimately excluded from the game. In contrast to the Imperial version, this walker featured a streamlined pod with an open configuration.
