Synopsis of the Plot

The main characters, Parlan Spinner, a Sith outcast, and princess Takara Hilts, along with what remains of the Keshiri crew of the sailing vessel Southern Star, are captured by a group known as the Doomed. The Doomed take them to their settlement, the City of the Doomed. Takara and Spinner's attempts to escape and fight their captors are quickly thwarted as they are disarmed and separated. Kaliska, the S'kytri leader of the Doomed, escorts the two Sith to the Hall of Regret, where she recounts the history of the Doomed. She explains that the Doomed are the descendants of ancient Jedi and Dark Jedi exiles who were marooned on Kesh following the Hundred-Year Darkness approximately almost four thousand years ago. After engaging in conflict, the two Force orders eventually reconciled, and the Dark Jedi secured their Great Weapon within an oubliette. Subsequently, they migrated to Eshkrene, where they kept watch over the Keshiri while endeavoring to find equilibrium in the Force.

Takara and Kaliska develop a bond of friendship, and Kaliska introduces Takara to the settlement's stables, where she imparts the Force ability of animal friendship. Meanwhile, Spinner is imprisoned alongside the rest of the Keshiri crew after expressing interest in seeing the Great Weapon. However, Spinner and the Keshiri crew manage to break free from their confinement and steal the Great Weapon before escaping the City of the Doomed aboard the Southern Star. The Doomed discover both the theft of the Great Weapon and the escape of the prisoners. Kaliska and Takara successfully intercept the Southern Star and attempt to dissuade Spinner from opening the oubliette. Disregarding their entreaties, Spinner proceeds to open the oubliette, thereby releasing Baron Remulus Dreypa, a Dark Jedi who had been confined for four millennia.
