MD-series medical droid

The MD-series medical droid, a product of Industrial Automaton, represented a line of medical droids designed to function similarly to the 2-1B surgical droid, sharing a similar appearance. Throughout the galaxy, these MD medical specialists were frequently encountered; although not as sophisticated as the 2-1B units, they garnered significant respect in medical facilities on less developed planets. Their affordability and focused expertise in specific medical areas proved invaluable to local doctors. The lower cost, typically around 2,000 credits for a standard unit, also made them a popular choice. Because the majority of MD units operated within sterile medical bays, they generally required minimal upkeep; with proper maintenance, these droids could remain functional for centuries.

The series comprised various models, identified by numbers ranging from MD-0 to MD-10. The primary distinctions between these models lay in their specialized skill subroutines and the types of specialty tool attachments they utilized. These factors tailored each model to serve as a specialized medical assistant in a particular field, while maintaining a consistent external design.

Among the most prevalent models were the MD-0, designed for diagnostic purposes; the MD-2, specializing in anesthesiology; and the MD-4, proficient in microsurgery. The MD-5 served as a general-purpose medical droid.

Other notable models included the MD-1, functioning as a lab technician, and the MD-3, working as a pharmacist.

MD units were in service on board the Death Star I.

An MD-5 medical droid provided assistance to Weston Warsheld, the High Lord of House Calipsa within the Tapani sector. Another MD-5 unit, known as Emdee, served the ersatz Emperor Trioculus during his time as a figurehead in the Grand Moff's attempted coup.
