MD-series medical droid

The MD-series medical droid was a series of medical droids produced by Industrial Automaton. These droids were intended to serve as counterparts to the 2-1B surgical droid and shared a similar appearance. Throughout the galaxy, MD medical specialists were frequently seen, and although they were not as sophisticated as the 2-1B, they were highly valued in medical facilities on less developed planets. Their affordability and specialized expertise in particular medical areas made them extremely beneficial to local doctors. Their lower cost was also a factor in their popularity, with a standard unit typically costing around 2,000 credits. Because most MD units were housed in sterile medical bays, they required minimal upkeep, and with proper maintenance, they could operate for centuries.

The series included various models, identified by numbers ranging from MD-0 to MD-10. These models differed primarily in their specialized skill subroutines and the types of specialty tools they could mount. This specialization allowed each model to function as a dedicated medical assistant in a specific field, while maintaining a consistent external design.

Among the most prevalent models were the MD-0, which specialized in diagnostics; the MD-2, which served as an anesthesiologist; and the MD-4, which focused on microsurgery. The MD-5 model was designed as a general-purpose medical droid.

Other well-known models included the MD-1, who worked as a lab technician, and the MD-3, who served as a pharmacist.

MD units were in service on board the Death Star I.

Weston Warsheld, the High Lord of House Calipsa in the Tapani sector, utilized an MD-5 medical droid. Another MD-5 unit, known as Emdee, assisted the ersatz Emperor Trioculus during his time as a figurehead in the Grand Moff's attempted coup.
