The Mission to Bast Castle, occurring in 22 ABY, involved a group of Jedi dispatched by Tionne to the former Imperial stronghold known as Bast Castle located on Vjun. Solusar's team ventured there to delve into whispers suggesting the presence of the late Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber within the fortress, with the aim of securing it if the rumors proved accurate. Accompanying her were Jedi Master Ikrit, Jedi adepts Anakin Solo—Han Solo's and Leia Organa Solo's youngest son—Tahiri Veila, the droid R2-D2, and Solo's comrade Uldir Lochett.
Having navigated through Bast Castle's automatic defenses and traps, the lightsaber was located. Simultaneously, a party of mercenaries and pirates, led by a cloaked, lightsaber-wielding individual named Mage Orloc, made their entrance. After a brief confrontation that separated Solusar and Ikrit from the rest, Orloc absconded with Kenobi's lightsaber, prompting the other Jedi to give chase. During a face-off between the Mage and a solitary Lochett, Orloc bragged about his abilities to Lochett and revealed the presence of another Jedi relic within the castle—the holocron belonging to Old Republic Jedi Master Asli Krimsan.
However, the other Jedi were able to rescue Uldir, causing the Mage to run away. They then looked for Asli Krimsan's holocron in the private quarters of the former Sith Lord Darth Vader. After they found it, Orloc made a sudden reappearance and stole the holocron. Despite activating several trapdoors to slow them down, he ended up falling into one himself. As the Mage descended into the abyss, Uldir seized the holocron from Orloc's grasp. With their mission's objectives met, the Jedi then journeyed back to the Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4.
In 0 ABY, Darth Vader, once Obi Wan Kenobi's apprentice but later a Sith Lord, killed the Jedi Knight aboard the First Death Star. Following this duel, Lord Vader obtained his lightsaber and secured it within his stronghold, Bast Castle, situated on the isolated world of Vjun in the Outer Rim. Sometime between the Great Jedi Purge in 19 BBY and his death in 4 ABY during the Battle of Endor, Vader also acquired the holocron of Old Republic Jedi Master Asli Krimsan from the Jedi Archives on Coruscant. Asli Krimsan, a female instructor who dedicated over two centuries to training young Jedi, compiled her teachings into the device to benefit future generations of Jedi instructors and students. Although Vader's records made no mention of the device, he kept it in Bast Castle on Vjun, storing it within a concealed vault in his personal chambers, adjacent to his sleeping pod.
In 22 ABY, the imposter "Mage" Orloc discovered that Asli Krimsan's holocron was in the castle. Simultaneously, whispers of Kenobi's lightsaber within Bast Castle drew a Jedi team to Vjun shortly after Orloc's arrival, both seeking the Jedi relics. The Jedi team, led by New Jedi Order historian Tionne, included Jedi Master Ikrit, Jedi trainees Anakin Solo and Tahiri Veila, the droid R2-D2, and Solo's friend Uldir Lochett.
Upon landing at Bast Castle aboard the Jemlaat-class yacht Lore Seeker, the Jedi team spotted another starship, later identified as Orloc's transport. Tionne's information, sourced from a broker, raised concerns that the broker had also shared the information with others. Expecting minimal resistance, they began their search of the castle, encountering a laser trap and a holographic death trap during their exploration. Behind the holographic trap, Anakin Solo located a secret door, leading to a hidden chamber containing Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber.
Simultaneously, Orloc was conducting his own search of the fortress. Having acquired plans of Bast Castle from a maintenance bay, he exploited his knowledge of secret doors and passages to gain an advantage over the Jedi, seizing Kenobi's lightsaber and causing Tionne and Ikrit to fall through a trapdoor. Solo, Veila, and Lochett pursued the Mage, but became separated as he evaded them. Lochett was the first to confront Orloc, engaging in conversation while Orloc brandished the lightsaber. The Mage boasted about his abilities to Lochett and revealed the presence of Krimsan's holocron within the castle.
After the Jedi team reunited and forced Orloc to retreat, they searched Darth Vader's personal quarters for the holocron. Solo discovered the secret vault containing the holocron behind Vader's sleeping pod. The vault responded to his touch and voice command, allowing him to retrieve Krimsan's holocron. At Lochett's request, Tionne activated the holocron to assess its functionality. While the Jedi examined the artifact, Orloc returned and snatched it from Tionne's hands. Attempting to escape through another set of doors, he triggered more trapdoors in the floor to hinder the Jedi's pursuit. However, R2-D2 closed the doors using a control panel before Orloc could exit the room, causing the Mage to lose his balance and fall through one of the trapdoors. Before falling, the Mage dropped Krimsan's holocron, which Lochett managed to catch. The Jedi team then returned to the Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4, having successfully recovered both Krimsan's holocron and Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber.
Despite the mission's triumph, the Mage's words led Uldir Lochett to believe that Orloc was a powerful Force-user capable of teaching him Force abilities. Lochett, desiring to become a Jedi despite lacking Force-sensitivity, believed Krimsan's holocron could aid his quest. With Master Skywalker away on a mission to investigate the Outbound Flight expedition, rumored to have reached the Unknown Regions, and Tionne unable to access the holocron (restricted to Jedi Masters), Lochett decided to steal both Jedi artifacts and seek Orloc's guidance at Exis Station.
During the night, he slipped into Skywalker's vacant quarters and pilfered Asli Krimsan's holocron and Kenobi's lightsaber. To reach Exis Station, Lochett stole the Sunrider, a ship belonging to Jedi Master Ikrit. The next morning, his friends discovered his and the Sunrider's disappearance. Immediately suspecting his destination as Exis Station, the Jedi spent the day searching the Praxeum grounds for him. When Lochett remained absent, Tionne, Ikrit, Solo, Veila, and R2-D2 journeyed to Exis Station aboard the Lore Seeker to retrieve him.
