Three years after ascending to the throne, King Regalun Petryph became consumed by a desire to exploit his planet's valuable resources for personal gain. However, his plans were met with resistance from Senator Deja Nebet and his council of nobles. To avoid their scrutiny, Petryph retreated to his royal hunting lodge, inadvertently making himself vulnerable to the manipulations of Darth Savik of the Dark Council.
Savik aimed to exploit Onderon's strategic importance as a refueling station for a Republic fleet destined to reinforce Corellia, where the Empire was planning to attack the Meridian Complex. Her scheme involved seizing control of the planet's anti-orbital defense cannons to catch the fleet off guard. Furthermore, Savik intended to secure Onderon's resources for the Empire. To achieve this, she manipulated Petryph, convincing him that Nebet and the nobles were plotting to overthrow him. This was designed to ignite a civil war, diverting attention while her agents infiltrated the cannon controls.
Even Mandalore the Avenger found himself drawn to Onderon upon discovering the location of the Mandalorian deserters known as the Ash'ad. Their leader, Mirli Lok, had struck a deal with King Regalun Petryph: in exchange for the freedom to hunt the planet's creatures, they would offer tribute from their kills and occasionally bring exotic creatures from off-world. Consequently, members of the Ash'ad were seen in the Royal Hunting Lodge. Shae would establish her forces in the city of Iziz and eventually task her people with hunting down the Ash'ad and recovering their armor from their bodies.
