Morgukai

The Morgukai represented one of several clandestine brotherhoods that emerged in the history of the Nikto people originating from Kintan.

Organization and philosophy

This particular cult is remembered as being one of the more obscure secret societies within Nikto society. They were part of a reclusive group of Nikto fighters, bound together by their unique combat rituals and a deep distrust of individuals who wielded the Force. Although they were famous as formidable Jedi killers, they held no affection for the Sith either. All Morgukai were male and belonged to the Kajain'sa'Nikto species.

Morgukai members could set aside concepts like good and evil, provided their personal sense of honor remained intact. The training and weaponry of the Morgukai made them a danger even to experienced Jedi. Beyond their impressive fighting skills, the cult's philosophical doctrines were largely unknown. These Nikto warriors refused to share their beliefs with outsiders, even when facing death. Moreover, their rules dictated that the only way to leave the order was to hand over one's armor to a fellow member and venture into the Burning Moon Range. The most egregious offense a Morgukai could commit was abandoning the brotherhood.

History

During the Cold War period, the Sith Empire repeatedly sought an alliance with the Morgukai cult, but their attempts were consistently rejected. This was due to the cult's strong code of honor and their awareness that the Empire looked down on the Nikto as an inferior race. Furthermore, many Morgukai regarded the Sith with the same disdain they held for the Jedi. During this time, Cathar colonists on Taris reportedly offered land and riches to the Morgukai in exchange for their help against the Sith Empire's presence on the planet. Their fearsome reputation and capabilities resulted in significant losses for the Imperial Military, forcing the Empire to enlist the aid of Mandalorian mercenaries to counter the threat. One of these Mandalorians instructed a Sith official to eliminate the Morgukai and claim their cortosis staffs as prizes. Tythan Phomm discovered that the cult had also established a presence on Nar Shaddaa, where they were recruiting Nikto to train for attacks on Republic targets. A Republic official was assigned to travel to the Morgukai temple and confront the cult and its leader.

By the final years of the Galactic Republic, the order was believed to have vanished long ago. In fact, by the time of the Separatist Crisis, the Morgukai were nearing extinction. Almost nothing was known about the history of these secretive Kajain'sa'Nikto warriors. Even the Jedi Archives held only fragmented legends about the cult. Before the Clone Wars, a Devaronian named Vilmarh Grahrk hired two Morgukai warriors, Tsyr and his son, Bok, to assist him in a scheme against Clan Secura. Their plan failed due to the intervention of the Jedi Order, and Tsyr was killed by Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos, while Bok lost a hand to Vos's Padawan, Aayla Secura. Following this event, some within the Jedi Order questioned whether the rare cortosis weapons used by the Morgukai were mass-produced by the cult or if Tsyr and his son had specifically created them to combat Jedi.

During the Clone Wars, the Confederacy of Independent Systems offered Bok the opportunity to rebuild his order. They cloned him, creating hundreds of new Morgukai on Saleucami, with the intention of forming their own clone army to use against the Republic. In addition to being the prime clone, Bok served as the primary instructor for the clones, teaching the Shadow Army Morgukai combat techniques. To make them even more lethal, Bulq recruited Anzati assassin teachers from Anzat to further train the Morgukai clones in the arts of stealth and assassination. Jedi Master Tholme discovered their existence and alerted the Republic, leading to a blockade of Saleucami. For five months, the Republic fought against the Morgukai legions, and a team of Jedi, led by Jedi master Oppo Rancisis, was dispatched to Saleucami. By the end of the siege, all of the clones, including their progenitor, had been killed.

Shortly after the rise of the New Order, the Galactic Empire officially declared the Morgukai an outlawed religion. Over time, the group declined and virtually disappeared, with the last known—albeit former—Morgukai, Ma'kis'shaalas, being killed by Darth Vader during the Conclave on Kessel while the Jedi was a fugitive. Despite their heavy losses, it was believed that the Morgukai continued to pursue honor and combat in the galaxy, but in secrecy. By 137 ABY, a lone Morgukai served as part of the pirate Rav's crew and accompanied him to Zeltros during a meeting to enlist Cade Skywalker's help. However, during the meeting, Skywalker insulted the Morgukai, who flew into a rage and attacked Cade, only to be pushed into a waterfall.

Training and Equipment

Training within their ranks involved a master-student relationship, used to initiate new members into the order. Members often trained their own sons, mirroring the relationship between a Jedi Master and their Padawan. This training produced skilled warriors, sometimes capable of matching even the legendary Jedi Knights. Their order shared some similarities with that of the Jedi. Fathers took their sons as apprentices, instructing them in deadly combat techniques. The bond between the Nikto Tsyr and Bok serves as an example of this master-student relationship. Additionally, Morgukai initiates were required to construct their own cortosis staffs as a test of their dedication to the order.

They were known for possessing mysterious weapons and armor that even Jedi Knights feared. Some of them wielded weaponry and armor made from cortosis ore, a substance capable of deflecting or dissolving a lightsaber blade. These cortosis weapons were designed to withstand lightsaber strikes. They were crafted from cortosis fiber, a material resistant to lightsaber blades. These Morgukai cortosis spears resembled lightsabers in reverse. They consisted of a meter-long shaft laced with lightsaber-resistant cortosis ore, with a small spear-tip at one end, created similarly to how a lightsaber blade was generated. The cortosis-weave armor worn by the Morgukai identified them as Kajain'sa'Nikto warrior elites.

Members were taught mental exercises to strengthen their resistance to Jedi mind tricks and manipulations, enabling them to fight their sworn enemies.

Behind the scenes

In the comic Rite of Passage, the Morgukai Tsyr and Bok are depicted with four-fingered hands, but their appearances in Clone Wars show them with the more humanoid five-fingered hands.
