Niru, a female Cantrosian, spearheaded a faction devoted to the Rebel Alliance. Their base of operations was situated on a planet within the Cantros system. In the year 4 ABY, Niru and her group found themselves embroiled in a damaging dispute with a competing faction, whom they mistakenly believed to be loyal to the Galactic Empire. During this conflict, Niru's faction managed to capture Rebel heroes such as Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, along with a fellow Cantrosian named Sami, due to the assumption that they were Imperial operatives. Following a short skirmish, Niru came to the realization that Durne, a member of her own faction, had been manipulating events to pit the two groups against each other. Once Durne was apprehended, Niru and her team recognized the true identities of the Rebel heroes and sought to reconcile with those they had wrongly identified as enemies.

By the time 4 ABY rolled around, Niru, a Cantrosian woman, was in charge of a faction that sided with the Rebel Alliance. Their headquarters was located on a planet within the Cantros system, nestled in the Outer Rim Territories. A number of Y-wing pilots belonging to Niru's faction intercepted a squadron of X-wing fighters, which Niru and her allies wrongly believed to be associated with a Galactic Empire–aligned Cantrosian group. This interception occurred near the planet of Saijo, resulting in the downing of the X-wings. However, one pilot, Minka, survived the crash on Saijo and was rescued by Rebel heroes Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo.
Minka, who was a Rebel sympathizer herself, believed the other faction to be Imperial agents. This left Organa, Skywalker, and Solo in a state of confusion. Eager to investigate, the group picked up Minka's companion, Sami, and set course for Niru's base aboard the Millennium Falcon. On their way, the Falcon was attacked by more of Niru's Y-wings and crash-landed in a gully on the planet. After Skywalker used the Force to levitate Minka and Organa to safety, Niru and some of her followers ambushed and captured Sami, Skywalker, and Solo. The three were taken to a nearby cave and restrained using vines.

Despite some members of the faction advocating for the torture of their captives, Niru intervened to prevent such actions. She argued that such methods were against their moral principles as Rebels. However, Durne, a Cantrosian who had been employed by the Nagai commander Knife to create discord within the Cantros system, attempted to convince Niru that the prisoners were indeed Imperial agents and should be killed. Sami and Solo, who overheard the conversation and recognized Durne as a prominent member of Minka's faction, exposed his deceitful actions.
Although touched by their words, Niru still ordered her comrades to attack when Minka and Organa arrived, unwilling to abandon her belief that an Imperial ambush was imminent. As the battle intensified, Niru once again called for reason and calm. However, Durne targeted Niru, attempting to exploit the chaos to secretly assassinate her with a blaster shot and regain control of the situation. Skywalker, igniting his lightsaber, intercepted the shot and deflected it back at Durne, temporarily incapacitating the double agent. Niru was amazed by Skywalker's skill with his weapon and recognized him as a Jedi Knight and Rebel hero. As the faction also encountered Organa and Solo, Durne tried to escape, but Niru swiftly stopped him. She then joined her people as the fighting ceased, with everyone realizing that they were on the same side.
Niru, a strong believer in the Rebel Alliance's values, deeply opposed the idea of torturing captives. She considered such practices to be characteristic of the Empire, regardless of the captives' actions. Upon discovering Durne's betrayal, Niru personally took action to prevent his escape. Niru had white fur, long white hair, and green eyes.
Niru made her debut in the Marvel Comics issue Star Wars (1977) 93, a part of the Star Wars comic series, which was released on December 18, 1984, and written by Mary Jo Duffy. The artwork for Niru in the comic was done by Sal Buscema.
