Noab Hulis

Noab Hulis, a male Miraluka Jedi Master, dedicated his life to the Jedi Order during the era preceding the Great Sith War. He fathered three daughters, each of whom would eventually follow in his footsteps and serve the Jedi. Upon learning about the Jedi Chamma, who had embraced the Dark Jedi path and retreated into self-imposed exile for over a century after believing the Force had forsaken him, Hulis embarked on a mission to guide Chamma back to both the light side of the Force and the Jedi Order. Locating the former Jedi on H'ratth, the Miraluka initially struggled to connect with Chamma. However, Hulis ultimately recounted Chamma's own history, stirring up long-dormant memories. Hulis argued that Chamma had not been betrayed by the Force, but rather he had betrayed it, leading the former Jedi to return to the Order and become a prominent Jedi Master.

Furthermore, Hulis cultivated relationships with influential members of the galactic nobility, including Barrison Draay and Alok Adasca. Hulis took a particular interest in Draay, recognizing his potential as a Force-sensitive individual. The Miralukan facilitated Draay's swift advancement within the Jedi ranks, arranging for him to be trained by Jedi Master Arca Jeth on Arkania. Draay also developed a close bond with one of Hulis's daughters, Krynda, who had received training from Master Vodo-Siosk Baas. Hulis witnessed both Draay and Krynda being knighted on Arkania by Master Jeth. The two later married, and Krynda bore Hulis's grandchild, Lucien. However, the Great Sith War exacted a heavy toll on the family, as both Draay and one of Hulis's daughters perished during the conflict.

Biography

Chamma's Redemption

Hulis with Lords Adasca and Draay

Noab Hulis, a male Miraluka, dedicated his life to serving the Jedi Order. Over time, he became the father of two daughters, both of whom joined the Jedi Order, and subsequently a third, Krynda, with a Human female. Krynda inherited both the precognitive abilities characteristic of the Miraluka and the functional eyes of a Human, ultimately earning her own place within the Jedi Order under the tutelage of Master Vodo-Siosk Baas.

Later, Hulis learned of Chamma, a Dark Jedi who had once been a Jedi Knight. Over a century prior, Chamma had traveled to the planet Athiss with two companions to confront a Sith disturbance. During this expedition, Chamma succumbed to the dark side of the Force, and after destroying the Sith creature, he felt abandoned by the Force. Consequently, Chamma sought self-imposed exile on H'ratth, remaining there for over a century. Hulis resolved to confront Chamma and guide him back to the Jedi Order.

Upon locating Chamma on H'ratth, Hulis discovered the former Jedi sleeping. The Miraluka waited within Chamma's living quarters until he awoke, at which point Chamma confronted him. Hulis declared his intention to bring Chamma back to the light, but the former Jedi responded by brandishing his lightsaber and demanding that Hulis leave his residence. The Miralukan complied, only to return the following day, where he was once again rebuffed by Chamma.

Hulis persisted in visiting Chamma's residence day after day until the former Jedi finally agreed to listen to what the Miralukan had to say. Hulis identified himself and recounted a story of a fallen Jedi who had become a Sith and attracted two followers to his cause. The Sith had lured three Jedi Knights, hoping to sway them to their side. However, the Jedi Knights had hoped to defeat the Sith, although they lacked the requisite experience. Chamma realized that Hulis was telling his tale, in an attempt to stir century-old memories in the former Jedi. According to the Miraluka, the Sith separated the Jedi Knights and forced them to succumb to their anger. The youngest of the Knights, however, had overcome the Sith ringleader with his newfound knowledge of the dark side. As Hulis finished his story, Chamma realized that he had not been betrayed by the Force, but that it was he who had betrayed it by falling to the dark side. As a result, Chamma returned to the Jedi Order, and after training on Ossus, he became a Jedi Master who went on to instruct the likes of Andur Sunrider in the ways of the Force.

Family and Connections

Hulis as Keeper of the Noetikon of Light

Over time, Hulis cultivated friendships with influential figures. The Arkanian Alok, Lord Adasca, and the Human Barrison, Lord Draay, both considered Hulis among their acquaintances. Draay, in particular, exhibited a talent for the Force and trained at Master Arca Jeth's praxeum on Arkania. Hulis championed Draay's advancement through the Jedi ranks. The young Human hailed from a wealthy estate, and had brought his retainer, Haazen, along to the praxeum to also be trained as a Jedi. Hulis was greatly impressed by Draay's choice, as it demonstrated that all were equal in the eyes of the Jedi. Over time, Draay grew close to Hulis's daughter, Krynda.

When the time came for Draay and Krynda to be knighted, Hulis attended a lavish reception held by Adasca. The Arkanian jokingly referred to the event as a "wake," as Draay would finally be leaving behind his former life of business for the path of a Jedi. Hulis sang Draay's praises, commending the young man before being led off by Adasca. Later, Hulis attended the knighting ceremony of his daughter and Draay. Master Jeth presided over the knighting, during which Haazen was overlooked for promotion. Draay and Krynda later married, although Draay would perish years later during the Great Sith War, although not before siring a son of his own, Lucien. That conflict also claimed the life of one of Hulis's other daughters. Krynda went on to found the Jedi Covenant, watching for the return of the Sith. Although the blood of Hulis flowed in Lucien's veins, he did not inherit the ability to see into the future from his mother, as the Miralukan blood did not run strongly enough.

Personality and characteristics

Hulis was known for his persistence, repeatedly attempting to reason with Chamma despite facing threats and constant rejection. He was a skilled storyteller, capable of rekindling ancient memories in Chamma's mind and persuading him to embrace the path of a Jedi once more. Initially, he chose to leave his pupil-less Miraluka eyes uncovered, but later opted to cover them as he aged. With three of his daughters joining the Order, Hulis gained a reputation for favoritism, although he also actively supported the development of other Jedi, such as Barrison Draay, despite the Human's relatively late start to his Jedi training.

Powers and skills

As a Miraluka, Hulis possessed Force sight and the ability to foresee the future, skills he passed on to his daughter, Krynda. He also wielded a lightsaber, which emitted a green light.

Behind the scenes details

Noab Hulis was first referenced in the Tales of the Jedi Companion, published in 1996 and authored by George R. Strayton. Twelve years later, the character made his first appearance in flashbacks featured in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic comic series issue Vindication, Part 2. He was also visually depicted for the first time by Bong Dazo. In the issue, Hulis is shown covering his non-functional Miralukan eyes, contradicting the Tales of the Jedi Companion, which stated that he left them exposed.
