Odumin

A legendary figure emerged during the Imperial Era within the Corporate Sector Authority: Odumin. He was a male Tynnan renowned as one of the most accomplished agents and executives the Authority ever saw. Beginning his career as a skip tracer, Odumin joined the Authority, quickly distinguishing himself by single-handedly rescuing Imperial Grand Inquisitor Laddinare Torbin from an assassination attempt. This act propelled him through the ranks to Territorial Administrator. Over the years, his anonymity became his trademark; operating almost exclusively through intermediaries, very few individuals ever saw his actual face. Even after his promotion, he frequently operated undercover as a field agent, often using the alias "Spray" while working as a skip tracer.

Odumin's success inspired many Tynnans, encouraging them to leave Tynna and explore the galaxy. One notable case occurred in 2 BBY, where, as "Spray," he investigated a vast slaving operation involving conspirators within the Corporate Sector Authority. He partnered with Corellian smuggler Han Solo and his Wookiee companion Chewbacca, who were also pursuing the slavers. Odumin skillfully manipulated the duo to expose the slavers, ultimately bringing them to justice, although they evaded prosecution for their past offenses against the Corporate Sector.

Biography

A Shadow in the Corporate Sector

Odumin, a male Tynnan, distinguished himself as one of the few members of his aquatic species to leave Tynna, embarking on a career as a skip tracer that eventually led him to the Corporate Sector Authority. Often underestimated due to his affable nature and unusual appearance, Odumin rapidly proved his capabilities as an agent. Starting as a Detached Duty agent within the Office of the Auditor-General, he quickly ascended the corporate hierarchy. He first gained recognition by thwarting an assassination attempt on Imperial Grand Inquisitor Laddinare Torbin by a religious cult known as the Church of the First Frequency during Torbin's tour of the Corporate Sector. When the cultists forced Torbin into a variable-gravity pool on a luxury liner, intending to seal it with a force field and drown him, Odumin utilized his natural swimming prowess to penetrate the force field and summon help, saving Torbin and numerous others. As a result, Odumin was promoted to a staff position, but he declined further rewards suggested by Torbin, maintaining his characteristic modesty.

Gallandro, Odumin's most trusted operative.

Odumin continued to excel, dismantling the Xiochi slaver gang single-handedly, which earned him another promotion to the prestigious role of Territorial Administrator. By this point, Odumin—a non-Human who found it more practical to remain anonymous and communicate through intermediaries—had become increasingly secretive. Believing that a newly appointed Territorial Administrator would be targeted by ambitious rivals, he decided to trust only himself, acting as his own top agent despite his high-ranking position. To maintain anonymity, he adopted the alias "Spray," a skip tracer, allowing him to travel freely within his territory and work without attracting attention or needing bodyguards. This strategy proved highly effective in the ensuing years. Odumin soon managed the largest and most productive territory in the Corporate Sector, becoming a legendary figure in the region due to his success and the enigma surrounding his identity.

However, Odumin eventually realized the need for assistance. An encounter with the dangerous Malorm gang nearly cost him his life; he escaped only by deceiving them into thinking he was someone's pet. Upon returning home, he hired a group of mercenaries, offering generous pay and amnesty to handle the dangerous tasks he could not and to eliminate the Malorms. Among these mercenaries was Gallandro, a gunfighter famed for his unparalleled speed. Gallandro impressed Odumin enough to be hired as his new assistant. In the following months, Odumin began to withdraw from field work, delegating more responsibilities to Gallandro, but he remained directly involved in special cases.

Investigating the Slavers

Encountering Han Solo

In investigating the slaving ring, Odumin used the aid of Corellian smuggler Han Solo and another Corporate Sector executive, Fiolla.

In 2 BBY, Odumin encountered one such special case: evidence of a large slaving ring operating within his territory, potentially involving some of his own deputies and Security Police officials. The stakes were high enough for the Tynnan to return to the field, again assuming the identity of the skip tracer Spray. Odumin discovered that the slavers' run to the planet Lur had ended disastrously, resulting in the death of one of the ringleaders, Zlarb. This led Odumin to Bonadan, where Zlarb was scheduled to meet his main partner after the job. There, Odumin encountered a suspicious Human he believed to be Zlarb's partner and attempted to ambush him in an empty hangar, fearing the man was trying to escape. The man fought him off, and Gallandro later identified him as Corellian smuggler Han Solo. Solo had been hired by the slavers as their pilot for the Lur run and was pursuing them for the promised 10,000 credits. Odumin saw an opportunity to use Solo as an unwitting pawn to draw out the slavers, reasoning that they would be more likely to reveal themselves when dealing with Solo, as he was not a security operative and unlikely to seek help from law enforcement.

First, "Spray" needed to get close to Solo. The Tynnan consulted the extensive Red List, used by skip tracers to collect debts from starship captains, and found that Solo owed 2,500 credits to starshipwrights on Oslumpex V—this would be his cover. Odumin initially tried to break into Solo's ship, the Millennium Falcon, but after failing to bypass the heavily modified lock on the YT-1300 freighter, he was confronted by Solo's towering Wookiee first mate, Chewbacca. Proving immune to Chewbacca's intimidation attempts, Odumin convinced the Wookiee to take him to Solo, who was meeting with Fiolla, an Authority Assistant Auditor-General also investigating the slaving ring, at a nearby cantina. Still posing as someone seeking the 2,500 credits, Odumin achieved his goal when Solo and Fiolla agreed to keep him close throughout their investigation. The group then separated, with Odumin traveling with Chewbacca on the Millennium Falcon to rendezvous on Ammuud, where they planned to gather information about the slaving ring's connections to a shipping firm led by the powerful House Glayyd.

Concluding the Investigation

Magg, one of the main ringleaders of the slaving ring who was placed in Corporate Sector custody due to Odumin's investigation.

Odumin ably filled Solo's role on the journey to Ammuud, serving as Chewbacca's co-pilot and regularly defeating the Wookiee at dejarik. However, they nearly didn't reach Ammuud at all when a sleeper bomb planted on the Falcon by the slavers detonated upon exiting hyperspace, tearing a hole in the ship's hull. Odumin took control of the ship as Bollux, one of Solo's droids, used its body to seal the breach. The Tynnan managed to crash-land the Falcon in the mountains outside Ammuud's main spaceport, but not before ejecting Bollux in an escape pod, directing it to find Solo. Despite being unaccustomed to wilderness survival, Odumin managed to survive with Chewbacca for several days, helping to repair the Falcon, dealing with local wildlife, and preparing meals while awaiting Solo's arrival. He even saved Chewbacca's life by pulling him out of a pond after the Wookiee crashed a makeshift glider while trying to escape a grazer stampede. Odumin and Chewbacca held out until Solo and Fiolla arrived in a Glayyd shuttle, having obtained crucial evidence from the Glayyds implicating several Corporate Sector officials in the slaving ring.

Along the way, Solo and Fiolla had encountered Gallandro, whom Odumin had previously sent to investigate the Glayyd connection. Odumin had been regularly using the Falcon's communications equipment to stay in touch with his lieutenant, and when it became clear that Solo and Fiolla were on their way, he instructed Gallandro to activate a transceiver aboard their shuttle. This transceiver acted as a beacon, attracting both the slavers and Gallandro, aboard a Corporate Sector Authority Victory-class Star Destroyer. Still maintaining his cover, Odumin piloted the Falcon as Solo and Chewbacca fought off the slavers in the freighter's laser turrets, holding them off until Gallandro's Star Destroyer arrived and tractor beamed all the remaining ships, including the Falcon. It was then that "Spray" revealed his true identity as Odumin, the Territorial Administrator, with the slavers in custody and what he believed to be an airtight case. Despite their invaluable assistance, Odumin still planned to prosecute Solo and Chewbacca for previous crimes against the Corporate Sector Authority, though he promised to seek leniency for them. However, Solo seized a brief opportunity to gain the upper hand: when Odumin and Fiolla entered a safety cage to return to the Authority destroyer, Solo quickly attached it to the Falcon and took off, effectively kidnapping them. Using them as leverage, Solo negotiated his release and a substantial payment before returning the Tynnan unharmed.

Although Odumin's exploits made him a legend in the Corporate Sector, he had an even greater impact on his homeworld of Tynna, where he was revered as a major role model. Despite his closely guarded identity and a largely fictional biography lacking any actual image of him, Odumin's adventures and successes inspired more Tynnans than ever before to venture offworld and explore the galaxy at large.

Personality and Traits

As an agent and Corporate Sector official, Odumin achieved legendary status despite his natural shyness and extreme desire for privacy, which kept his true identity secret from almost everyone. Exceptionally sharp, detail-oriented, and professional, Odumin valued people more than many others in the Corporate Sector hierarchy, yet possessed a ruthless side and knew how to achieve his goals. These traits, combined with his talent for undercover work, made him one of the most effective executives in the Corporate Sector Authority. He trusted only himself to handle sensitive tasks. Odumin could blend into crowds effortlessly and had a friendly demeanor that concealed his true identity. However, this amiability masked a complete lack of fear; he was often the first to act in dangerous situations. Even Chewbacca was surprised that the unassuming Tynnan, aware of his own small stature, was one of the few beings he could not intimidate with his fearsome Wookiee threats.

Persistence was key to Odumin's success as both an agent and an executive. Once he set his mind on something, nothing could deter him. Besides his tireless and unflappable nature in the field, Odumin possessed practical skills that aided his work. The Tynnan was a skilled pilot and hyperspace navigator, capable of flying the notoriously temperamental Millennium Falcon alone in combat. He was a keen strategist, applying tactics from dejarik to real-life situations effectively. While not much of a fighter—his species had poor eyesight, and he once claimed to Han Solo that he had never fired a weapon—he was physically capable in life-or-death situations, directly saving the lives of Imperial Grand Inquisitor Torbin and Chewbacca. These incidents showcased his natural swimming ability, honed in the cool lakes of his homeworld, Tynna, a pastime he continued to enjoy throughout his life.

All these qualities helped Odumin earn the trust and faith of Solo and Chewbacca during the Corporate Sector slaving ring investigation. Although he developed a particularly friendly rapport with the Wookiee, he ultimately adhered strictly to the rule of law and order, even while hoping to improve the culture of the Corporate Sector Authority. Odumin still intended to prosecute the two smugglers despite their close collaboration, relenting only when Solo opportunistically kidnapped him and Fiolla.
