The Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser, sometimes called simply the Praetor-class battlecruiser, represented a specific battlecruiser design. Its designation bore resemblance to that of the Praetor II-class utilized by the forces of the Imperial Navy. Before the Battle of Hoth, which occurred in 3 ABY, a single abandoned Praetor-class ship had its reactor pilfered by members of the Rebel Alliance. They used it to energize a massive ion cannon located within their Echo Base on the planet Hoth.
The Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser initially appeared within established Star Wars canon through the 2016 reference work, Star Wars: Complete Locations. Later, the 2021 reference book, Star Wars: Battles that Changed the Galaxy, explicitly identified it as the Praetor-class battlecruiser.

The inclusion of the battlecruiser in Star Wars: Complete Locations involved content sourced from the 2004 reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy, authored by James Luceno. This moment marked the initial mention of the Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser within the Star Wars Legends narrative universe.
It gained its identification as the Praetor-class battle cruiser within the 2008 reference book, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia. Further confirmation of its designation as the Praetor-class battlecruiser came in Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart's 2012 reference book, The Essential Guide to Warfare, which also categorized the starship Battalion as a Praetor. Consequently, the book established retroactively that the 1998 roleplaying supplement Tatooine Manhunt, published for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, served as the first, albeit implicit, mention of the Praetor class through the inclusion of the Battalion.
