Project Chubar

Under the direction of the Warlord named Zsinj, a scientific endeavor was undertaken, known as Project Chubar.

History

Originally, Emperor Palpatine himself commissioned the project, desiring Gamorrean operatives capable of Humanlike self-control. Zsinj likely took over the project around the time of 5bby, and by the time he did, it had expanded to involve thousands of alien test subjects.

Project Chubar, named after Chubar, a character featured in children's animated holoprograms, aimed to elevate the intellect of nonhuman sentient or near-sapient beings through a combination of genetic, chemical, and behavioral methods. The enhanced beings were then intended to serve as agents for the organization that created them. Ironically, Garik Loran, one of the New Republic operatives who would later reveal the project, provided the voice for Chubar during his younger years.

The project's base of operations was the Binring Biomedical Product facility located on Saffalore, and was headed by Doctor Tuzin Gast, with assistance from his niece Edda Gast. Transparisteel cells for the lab were supplied by a facility on Xartun.

For less intelligent sapient lifeforms or near-sapient creatures, the program sought to raise their intelligence to levels comparable to Human standards. In the case of already intelligent species, the program aimed to modify the quality and specialization of their intelligence to better align with Human brain characteristics, and sometimes even granted subjects intellect surpassing that of a Human.

The program's subjects encompassed a variety of species, including Bilars, Chadra-Fan, Ewoks, Gamorreans, Kowakian monkey-lizards, Ortolans, Ranats, Talz, and even Dianogas. Some of these subjects exhibited Force-sensitive abilities. One notable success of the program was Subject Gamma-9104, a Gamorrean who adopted the name Voort saBinring after being allowed to escape by his creator. Other subjects included the Dark Jedi Gorc and Pic, who underwent further enhancements through Agent Blackhole's Sith alchemy.

After Tuzin Gast's suicide, which involved causing an explosion in the lab's Epsilon Wing, the project experienced a minor setback, but continued on Saffalore under the direction of Edda Gast and Novin Bress. A secondary lab was situated aboard Zsinj's flagship, the Iron Fist. Once Zsinj discovered that New Republic pilot Voort saBinring had escaped the program with Tuzin Gast's help, and that the explosion had been used to cover it up, he ordered the consolidation of the laboratories on the Iron Fist and instructed Edda Gast to transform the Saffalore facility into a trap for Wraith Squadron.

Gara Petothel released a significant number of subjects, who subsequently escaped aboard a Sentinel-class landing craft piloted by Kolot, an Ewok subject of Project Chubar. While it's possible they accompanied Petothel to Corellia, their ultimate fates remain unknown. Kolot, at least, appears to have remained with Gara, as she intended to introduce him to Myn Donos.

Project Chubar laid the groundwork for Zsinj's chemical brainwashing initiative, Project Minefield. With the destruction of the Iron Fist, the project was presumably terminated along with Zsinj's other endeavors.
