Quermian

Quermians were a sentient species of spindly humanoids with elongated necks. Their homeworld was the planet Quermia. A distinctive feature of Quermians was their possession of two brains: one in the head, and another in the chest. Additionally, they had two pairs of arms. During the Invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation, the Jedi Order included four Quermians. Among them was Jedi Master Yarael Poof, a respected member of the Jedi High Council.

Biology and appearance

Yarael Poof's two sets of arms

Quermians were a slender humanoid sentient species characterized by their pale white skin and red eyes. These eyes were set within a bulbous head atop a long, slender neck, which also featured a small mouth. Notably, they possessed two brains: one in the head and another in the chest. Lacking a spinal column, Quermians stood tall, often exceeding most other humanoids by over three [feet](/article/foot]. They had two pairs of thin [arms](/article/limb], each ending in hands with delicate fingers, and legs that ended in large feet with prominent toes. The second set of arms was often concealed, supported by the brain in the chest. Instead of noses, Quermians used olfactory glands in their hands for smelling. Their lifespan could reach 200 years or more. Due to the numerous physical and genetic similarities between Quermians and the Xexto, xenobiologists hypothesized a shared ancestry. However, the truth is that ancient Arkanian scientists created Quermians from the Xexto species.

Society and culture

Some Quermians, like Jedi Master Yarael Poof, chose to hide their second pair of arms under clothing and traditionally wore cannom collars. Poof considered his last name to be a distinguished and ancient one among his people. Carson Teva included an entry on Quermians in "Species From A to Z," a survival guide distributed during the New Republic Era.

Quermians in the galaxy

Hailing from the Outer Rim world of Quermia, four Quermians were part of the Jedi Order during the Invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation. The most experienced among them was Jedi Master Yarael Poof. A respected figure on the Jedi Council, he was a renowned diplomat and teacher, as well as a skilled user of Jedi mind tricks and illusions.

Nim Tar, a Senator in the New Republic, was a Quermian.

Behind the scenes

The first appearance of Quermians was in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. While not explicitly named in the film, the species was first identified in Star Wars: Episode I The Visual Dictionary, a Star Wars Legends reference book from 1999 authored by David West Reynolds. Star Wars: Card Trader, an app released on iOS and Android platforms by The Topps Company, Inc. in 2015, confirmed the species' name as canon.

Despite being a member of the Xexto species, Ferpil Wallaway bears a striking resemblance to a Quermian, a species of genetically modified Xexto.
