Quermia

Quermia, a terrestrial planet, existed within the Outer Rim Territories. The Quermian species takes its name from this world, as their forebears were placed on Quermia by Arkanian scientists. During the [Clone Wars](/article/clone_wars], Quermia found itself within Separatist space, thereby isolating it from the Galactic Republic. The extensive blockade of Quermia ended when the Confederacy of Independent Systems collapsed, but the Imperial regime soon took control.

Description

Within the [Outer Rim Territories](/article/outer_rim_territories], Quermia was a planet situated at grid square S-5 on the Standard Galactic Grid. As a terrestrial planet, Quermia's surface was composed of green landmasses and vast ocean expanses. It was positioned near the terminus of the Perlemian Trade Route hyperlane, which stretched northeast from Coruscant, a planet in the Core Worlds, and linked it to Makem Te. Moreover, Quermia was located at the crossroads of the Perlemian Trade Route and the Overic Griplink hyperspace route, connecting it to Mon Cala. Another hyperspace route provided a connection between Quermia and the planet Toola. The planet Troiken, the homeworld of the Xexto species, was situated in the vicinity of Quermia.

History

Long ago, prior to the Imperial Era, Arkanian scientists populated Quermia with a genetic offshoot of the Xexto species. These beings, named after their homeworld, became the ancestors of the Quermian species. Despite the larger galactic community not knowing the origins of the Quermian species, the shared genetic markers between Quermians and Xexto led xenobiologists to believe they shared a common ancestor. The explanation for this relationship remained one of the galaxy's great enigmas.

The Quermian Jedi Master Yarael Poof was a native of Quermia.

Quermia, a member of the Galactic Republic, was situated within Separatist space during the Clone Wars, a war between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems that began in 22 BBY. The planet endured significant hardship due to an extensive Separatist blockade and its isolation. The blockade of Quermia was lifted with the Confederacy's fall at the end of the war in 19 BBY. Nevertheless, the Galactic Empire took control of the planet, which the Quermians generally considered to be little better than Separatist rule. In that same year, Quermia was promoted as a worthwhile destination along the Perlemian Trade Route. A poster found on the moon Pantora suggested that travelers fly to the planet aboard Luxury 3000 space yachts.

By 3 ABY, a Quermian holy relic had been removed from Quermia and put on display in the Imperial Museum on Coruscant, the capital of the Galactic Empire. "Species From A to Z," a survival guide distributed by the human Carson Teva during the New Republic Era, mentioned Quermia as the Quermian homeworld. An artist's journal was later restored, expanded, and exhibited at the Graf Archive no earlier than 34 ABY, and it also mentioned Quermia. The Ithorian artist Gammit Chond was thought to have drawn galactic maps depicting the Quermian homeworld, among other planets. These ancient maps, recovered from the Graf Archive's Shadow Stacks, were restored by Director Amel Fortoon many years after the [First Order-Resistance War](/article/first_order-resistance_war].

Inhabitants

Quermia was the original home of the garden Quermian species, who communicated using the same name language. Following the Arkanians' departure, the Quermians established a society that emphasized communal living and philosophical contemplation. The species' capacity to communicate and share emotions and concerns easily helped them maintain a long-lasting, peaceful society. Although Quermia's history was not always peaceful, external influences, rather than internal conflicts, were the usual cause of strife.

Yarael Poof, a Quermian Jedi Master who served on the Jedi High Council during the Galactic Republic's final years, was from Quermia, as was Needle, a Quermian Rebel Alliance Pathfinder. Needle thought the Quermian holy relic displayed in the Imperial Museum had been taken and ought to be given back to Quermia.

Behind the scenes

Quermia was initially referenced within current Star Wars canon in the 2015 reference work Ultimate Star Wars. Its first visual representation was in the 2016 reference book Star Wars: Galactic Atlas, with illustrations by Tim McDonagh. Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, Quermia was first mentioned in the 1999 book Star Wars Episode I Who's Who: A Pocket Guide to the Characters of The Phantom Menace, authored by Ryder Windham.
