Plot summary

Darth Maul confronts Darth Vader.

In this tale, Darth Vader journeys to the volcanic moon known as Kalakar Six. His mission is to intercept Rebel operatives believed to be transporting stolen schematics for the Death Star. Upon his arrival, Vader experiences a sense of familiarity and dispatches his unit of stormtroopers to investigate the surrounding area. However, these stormtroopers are swiftly eliminated by a mysterious figure wielding a red lightsaber.

Vader proceeds into a volcano's interior, where he encounters a group of individuals identifying themselves as the Prophets of the Dark Side. They reveal that the information regarding the Rebels was a ruse, and their true purpose in summoning him was to express their belief that he is unworthy to serve the Emperor, declaring that he does not carry "Bane's blood". As Vader moves to attack the prophets, he is stopped by Darth Maul. The Prophets had resurrected Maul with the intention of replacing Vader as the Emperor's right-hand, and they provoke Vader into a duel with the former Sith apprentice.

The two engage in a fierce battle, exchanging taunts and insults. Their fight takes them from within the volcano and onto a bridge suspended above a river of molten lava. The bridge gives way, but both Sith warriors narrowly avoid falling into the lava, and their duel continues.

Vader succeeds in splitting his adversary's lightsaber in two, though both halves remain functional. Maul then strikes Vader's helmet, causing him to fall to the ground. As Maul prepares to deliver the final blow, Vader uses the Force to summon his lightsaber and impales himself through the stomach, killing Maul who was behind him. With his last breath, Maul asks Vader what he could hate so much as to destroy him. Vader answers: "Myself."

When Vader faces the Prophets, Darth Sidious arrives and electrocutes them. He explains that he came to assess Vader's progress, but denies any connection to the Prophets. He then informs Vader that they must focus on stopping the Rebels who stole the plans, and Vader follows his master to a waiting shuttle, ready to serve.
