The Sea of Sand existed on the southern side of the desert planet known as Ponemah Terminal. This area, situated around the Southern Pole, was especially treacherous, even though the entire planet was unwelcoming. Towering waves of corrosive sand, reaching heights of fifteen-meter, constantly surged and crashed. Furthermore, random eruptions of lava geysers dotted the terrain, and the skies were perpetually filled with an ion storm. Due to these numerous perils, no one lived within the Sea of Sand.
Near the end of the Clone Wars, the Separatist cruiser called Obrexta III was damaged by Galactic Republic forces. It executed a random hyperspace jump and subsequently crashed within the Sea of Sand on Ponemah. Its cargo included the clone trooper Kix, who was in suspended animation, en route to Count Dooku for interrogation. Fifty decades afterward, the Obrexta III's emergency signal was triggered by an ion storm. This led several groups of pirates on the planet to risk the desert and its dangers in a search for Dooku's treasure, considering the late Sith Lord was once the richest individual in the galaxy.
