Self-destruct mechanism
A Viper probe droid activates its built-in destruction sequence.
A mechanism for self-destruction functioned as a defensive measure, enabling vital vehicles or devices to initiate their own destruction under specific conditions, such as the imminent risk of capture. This was frequently employed as a final defensive action to prevent the enemy from accessing sensitive information.
History
During the time of the Clone Wars, the Infiltrator demolition droids, which are both demolition droids and possess explosive charges, meant that certain bombers belonging to the Confederacy of Independent Systems were programmed to self-destruct in order to detonate the central power distribution grid located on Coruscant. This action would trigger a mandatory blackout, specifically designed to halt the vote on the bill aimed at deregulating banking conglomerates.
When Han Solo working alongside Chewbacca successfully eliminated a Viper probe droid on the icy planet of Hoth, the droid was still able to transmit relayed images of Echo Base before its destruction sequence was completed.
When Rookie One accompanied by Ru Murleen successfully destroyed the TIE Phantom factory situated on Imdaar Alpha, they transported the last remaining TIE Phantom to a Rebel base. However, the original designers had already considered this possibility, equipping each fighter with a self-destruct mechanism that was deactivated by a specific Imperial code. This ensured that if one were to fall into Rebel hands, they would be unable to replicate its advanced technology. Following the destruction of this short-lived fighter, its innovative technology was permanently lost. The Empire incorporated a self-destruct mechanism into its TIE Maulers as a way to inflict extra damage on enemy forces in the event that the TIE Mauler was attacked. The power core of the TIE Mauler would undergo an overload, resulting in the craft's explosion, which would then destroy or damage any troops, vehicles, or structures in close proximity.
The Zann Consortium was also known to implement self-destruction protocols for their Vengeance-class frigates and Aggressor-class Star Destroyers by intentionally overheating their ship cores if the combat situation demanded it.
Prior to the New Republic's liberation of Coruscant from the control of the Galactic Empire, Tycho Celchu volunteered to pilot a TIE/LN starfighter for the purpose of gathering intelligence on the planet. His starfighter was extensively modified with advanced sensor packages to aid in his mission. He was ultimately captured by Imperial forces after his ship sustained damage from two ion-cannon blasts, which subsequently disabled the self-destruct system.
As recently as 40 ABY, Slave I was equipped with a robust self-destruct system.
