Senate Oversight Committee

The Senate Oversight Committee functioned as a legislative body within the New Republic Senate following the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. This committee, directed by New Republic Chancellor Mon Mothma, was based on Coruscant around 9 ABY.

History

Around 9 ABY, the legislative committee was made up of Chancellor Mon Mothma, alongside Senators Mawood, Rodrigo, Hamato Xiono, in addition to a Gran senator. Following the events of the attack on the Vesper and General Hera Syndulla's mission to the Santhe Shipyards located on Corellia, the Senate Oversight Committee convened to discuss a report submitted by General Syndulla. Syndulla briefed the committee on Imperial loyalists who had engineered an incident on Corellia, conveying her suspicion that this event pointed to broader Imperial resurgence—specifically, the potential return of Grand Admiral Mitth'raw'nuruodo.

Syndulla then requested authorization to spearhead a task force to the Denab system for investigative purposes, a request that prompted an objection from Xiono. Xiono voiced his concern that Syndulla was simply trying to redirect New Republic assets towards her search for the missing Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger. Syndulla countered by reminding the senator that Ezra's disappearance was connected to Thrawn's own whereabouts, Xiono doubled down on his conviction, dismissing it as a mere pretext and arguing that they should prioritize aiding the citizens of the New Republic. This prompted Syndulla to question him about his service during the Galactic Civil War. Upon learning he had not served, she inquired if he had simply waited to see which faction would prevail, an inquiry that Xiono did not respond to.

Senators Mawood and Rodrigo then sided with Xiono's position, Syndulla emphasized that Thrawn's capabilities were not typical of a standard Imperial officer and implored the committee to assist her in averting a new conflict. Xiono, however, remained unyielding, asserting that Thrawn was dead, and that Bridger was dead as well. As Syndulla began to retort sharply, Mothma intervened, requesting a private conversation with Xiono and the other senators. Syndulla complied, reluctantly excusing herself. Later, she informed former Jedi Ahsoka Tano and her Padawan Sabine Wren about Xiono and the senate committee's refusal to provide assistance. Defying the denial of support, Syndulla subsequently traveled to the Denab system accompanied by a squadron under the command of Captain Carson Teva to aid Tano and Wren. The architect droid Huyang expressed surprise upon learning that Syndulla's actions were not sanctioned by the senators. As a consequence of her insubordination, they dispatched a small contingent of New Republic vessels to bring her back for a hearing on Coruscant, with the intention of potentially revoking her rank if she was found to have acted improperly.
