While Rey, Poe, Rose, and BB-8 are wrapping up a straightforward assignment to gather crucial provisions for the struggling Resistance, they pick up a distress signal originating from the world of Minfar. Spark of the Resistance is situated "a handful of months" following the Hosnian Cataclysm, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas places in the year 34 ABY. The book also alludes to Poe Dameron and Finn's mission to Tevel, as portrayed in the young readers' book Choose Your Destiny: A Finn & Poe Adventure. Events detailed in the comic book limited series Star Wars: Allegiance are also referenced.
