Star Wars: The Essential Atlas Online Companion
The Star Wars: The Essential Atlas Online Companion is comprised of a collection of articles featured on StarWars.com, the official Star Wars website. These articles were released following the 2009 publication of The Essential Atlas and were created by its writers, Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace. These articles present lists of planetary systems, mirroring the appendix found in The Essential Atlas, but with an added detail: the sector location for many systems, a feature absent from the printed book. These lists are designed as a dynamic resource, intended for ongoing updates and revisions. These changes aim to correct errors, enhance existing information, and incorporate new locations as they appear in new Star Wars media. Furthermore, the Online Companion showcased galaxy maps, pinpointing the locations of various sectors, created by the artist Modi.
According to comments from Jason Fry, co-author of the Atlas, as shared on TheForce.net's Jedi Council Forums, the Online Companion's database organized star systems based on the names of well-known celestial objects, rather than their official system names. He clarified that this listing was not intended to introduce new system names or contradict established continuity. Fry also expressed his intention to establish homeworlds for various species, drawing from contextual clues within their names.
Online updates
On September 10, 2009, an exclusive map detailing the Outer Rim sectors, derived from the original Outer Rim map in The Essential Atlas, along with a revised appendix, were made available. Subsequently, on March 15, 2011, a map illustrating the Mid Rim sectors and a new appendix were published. This appendix included sector information for Mid Rim systems, previously omitted systems, and newly introduced systems, including those featured in The Clone Wars.

An email from Jason Fry later indicated that an updated appendix and a sector map of the Expansion Region were forthcoming. These updates were ultimately released on October 26, 2012. On June 11, 2014, Jason Fry exclusively provided Wookieepedia with a high-definition version of the previously released Expansion Region sectors map. He also revealed that Lucasfilm Ltd. had approved the publication of further appendix updates and sector maps.
