Ben Kenobi's Encore is a comic strip crafted by Archie Goodwin and brought to life with illustrations by Al Williamson. Its initial release was through the Los Angeles Times Syndicate, spanning from May to July of 1982. Subsequently, it found its way into Amazing Heroes magazine in issues #27–30, was included in Classic Star Wars 10 and 11, featured on StarWars.com's webstrips area within Hyperspace, and most recently, it appeared in Star Wars: Luke Skywalker, Last Hope for the Galaxy.
Darth Vader enlisted the services of an obscure and aged actor, who then underwent plastic surgery to take on the appearance of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Vader also provided him with Jedi training, and technological enhancements were implemented to amplify the resemblance beyond mere physical likeness.
The impersonator made his debut on the Expansion Region desert world of Aridus, where he intervened to rescue a Rebel Alliance operative from capture by Imperial forces. Later on, this Kenobi double spearheaded a rebellion of the indigenous reptilian Chubbits—who had long suffered mistreatment at the hands of Imperial colonists—against the local Imperial garrison. Hovertrains were targeted in ambushes, and Imperial military and mining installations were subjected to raids. The Chubbits and their leader executed swift strikes and vanished without a trace.
Word of these events reached the Rebel base situated on the jungle moon of Yavin 4, which was currently under siege by an Imperial fleet. Luke Skywalker, the young Rebel pilot—haunted by the memory of his mentor's demise during a confrontation with Darth Vader on the first Death Star and intrigued by this unexpected reappearance—set off for Aridus with C-3PO aboard a transport.
Upon their arrival on Aridus, they witnessed a group of poorly armed Chubbits attacking a heavily fortified Imperial hovertrain. Witnessing his fellow rebels in peril, Luke and C-3PO hurled two bags containing proton charges from their transport at the hovertrain, resulting in its destruction. However, the resulting debris caused Skywalker to lose consciousness due to their proximity to the explosion. Fortunately, the Kenobi impostor—who was leading the Chubbits—arrived and provided assistance to Skywalker.
Skywalker was fortunate in that he only sustained a minor concussion from the flying debris. He quickly recovered, and together with his droid, he joined forces with the Chubbits and Kenobi, unaware that he was an impostor. Subsequently, they continued their journey across the Aridus deserts aboard a locally constructed wind-runner. Later on, the impersonator secretly contacted Darth Vader to provide an update.
The Chubbit rebels continued their insurgency against the Empire, attacking and obliterating an Imperial outpost. Employing technological gimmicks to compensate for his lack of Force abilities, the Kenobi impostor gained the respect of both the Chubbits and Luke Skywalker. Following the raid, the Kenobi impersonator used a holoprojector to contact Lord Vader himself. He informed his master that everything was progressing according to plan and that Skywalker had joined him, still oblivious to his true identity. The plan involved the impostor leading Luke to the Iron Tower, where Vader would be waiting to take Skywalker prisoner as a Sith Lord.
However, the impersonator began to experience reservations about his mission. The respect shown by the Chubbits and the admiration in Skywalker's eyes made him realize that Obi-Wan Kenobi had been a great Jedi Master, while he was merely a cowardly actor willing to serve the oppressive Sith-led Galactic Empire.
Later, accompanied by their droffi steeds, he and Skywalker embarked on a solitary mission to the Iron Tower, with the goal of destroying the automated power transformer and signal amplifier whose powerful ultra-strong frequency waves were debilitating the nervous systems of the Chubbits. En route, the duo defeated an Imperial patrol speeder.
Upon arriving at the Iron Tower, the pair separated as planned by Lord Vader. The Dark Lord of the Sith contacted the Kenobi impersonator and instructed him to lure Skywalker into his trap. However, having witnessed the Empire's true nature, he defied the Sith Lord and activated a control lever that initiated a power overload in the Tower's upper levels, resulting in the destruction of the structure and effectively shutting down most of the Imperial operations on the planet.
The resulting explosion inflicted severe injuries on the Kenobi impostor, leading to his death in Skywalker's arms. Before his final breath, he confessed to Skywalker that he had destroyed the Iron Tower and revealed his true identity as an impostor.
Luke later shared the details of what transpired with C-3PO (who had been sent to Luke by the Kenobi impostor just before his sacrifice). C-3PO then mentioned that Vader was seemingly killed in the Iron Tower's explosion, although Luke suspected that Vader might have survived and that they won't be rid of him as easily.
Vader was rendered unconscious by the debris and left for dead, but he regained consciousness long enough to witness Luke Skywalker's ship departing. He was subsequently rescued by Jix, a former Imperial soldier.
