The Toys That Never Were

Toys That Were Never Made is an article by Chris Fawcett published in issue 92 of Star Wars Insider. The article features photos of prototypes and presents ten action figures or sets that Kenner designed in the 1970s and 1980s but ultimately did not release.

Figures That Were Planned

Prototypes of Chewbacca's family
  • Rocket Fett - This very well-known unreleased figure of Boba Fett was initially intended as a mail-in promotion. However, it was cancelled after a child died from choking on a projectile from a similar toy from Battlestar Galactica a few months prior to its scheduled release. It is known that nine variations of this figure exist.

  • R1-G4 - An action figure of R1-G4 was not produced, but Fawcett stated the reason for this was not publicly known.

  • Wookiee family - Following the broadcast of The Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978 , Kenner considered creating a toy series based on Chewbacca's family . Prototypes of Chewbacca , Malla , Itchy , and Lumpy were created, but the project was eventually abandoned.

  • Vac-metallized figures - During the early 1980s, Vacuum-metallized figures representing a TIE pilot and a member of the Emperor's Royal Guard were designed and prototyped; however, they were never released.

  • Accessory figures - A set of accessories for the heroes, similar to an existing "survival pack" toy, was planned but never produced.

  • Gargan - An action figure depicting Yarna d'al' Gargan was developed for the original Power of the Force series; however, it was rejected because Lucasfilm Ltd. deemed the six- breasted character unsuitable for children.

  • Luke Skywalker in robes - There is very little information available about a figure of Luke Skywalker in robes sculpted from plastic that was never released.

  • Unproduced Power of the Force - Kenner's initial Power of the Force toyline concluded after only one wave, which resulted in several figures remaining unreleased.

  • 2nd Series Ewoks - After an initial line of action figures based on the Ewoks television program, a second line was in development. It was intended to feature Chief Chirpa , Paploo , Morag , Weechee , Chituhr , and Bondo . Numerous samples of these figures exist, but they never went into mass production.

  • Unproduced Droids - A toy line based on the Star Wars Droids animated series was released, but the second series of toys was cancelled.
